The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, or ACGME, recently reaccredited Beaumont Health System’s Graduate Medical Education program.

“We were fully reaccredited for the maximum five years, with zero citations and two commendations,” explains Jeffrey Devries, M.D., M.P.H., director, Graduate Medical Education, Beaumont Health System.

The ACGME is the organization that accredits all residency and fellowship programs across the United States including nearly 9,000 residency and fellowship programs at approximately 700 institutions. These accredited programs educate more than 116,000 resident physicians in 135 medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties.

Adds Dr. Devries, “This outstanding result represents a national level, peer-reviewed validation of the high quality of our 37 ACGME-accredited residency and fellowship programs.”

Residents are medical school graduates. Residency programs consist of three to seven years of on-the-job training, depending on the specialty. Fellows are physicians who have completed their residency and undergo additional specialized training. Fellowship programs are one to three years.

Beaumont has 429 residents and fellows at its hospitals in Royal Oak, Grosse Pointe and Troy.

“We are honored to teach an extraordinary group of residents and fellows, who come to us from the most competitive medical schools across the nation and around the world,” says Dr. Devries. “And now, with our Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, we will be able to teach future physicians from the beginning of their professional careers to their acceptance to some of the nation’s most competitive residency programs, including Beaumont’s residencies.”
