‎"We believe that when a CEO pays his autoworkers enough to buy the cars that they build, the whole company does better." (Obama)
What did you think of the focus both Biden and Obama put on the auto industry during their speeches? Just right? Over the top?
(And your friendly reminder: there is not a lot gained by name-calling here.)

Mr. Ford come up with that idea about 100 years ago but he raised wages for his workers. Does Mr. Obama mean that the two-tier pay scale will be going away? I don't know many people making $15/hour that can afford to buy a brand new car.

When will Goverment Motors pay back the LOAN ? Instead they gave bonuses to workers and the Volt is selling so well they layed off workers for a second time this year. They're not out of the woods yet and it doesn't look like anytime soon, more layoffs will be in the future because of overall lack of car sales worldwide and lack of cash flow and credit rating, that will hurt the borrowing for future product development.

I like this question. I did like the emphasis on the auto industry, not just for Michigan, but also for the country. America needs to have other flagship industry that they are world renowned for, but letting America lose its footing in the auto industry would be a sad message to send to the rest of the world, and also a demoralizing message to us in America. If we let the American auto industry die out without clear replacements, I think it would be the beginning of demise for America. I also think that the auto industry was built on both profit and worker well-being -- kind of a win-win for all, which may be another reason they focused on this industry in particular. We need more models of businesses that can make profit and treat workers well in the 21st century. America hasn't figured it out yet.

Should the workers who build jets be able to buy them as well? What about those who build homes? A new car is an extreme luxury. It is neither practical, nor necessary. "lines" like that one are an insult to those of us with triple digit IQs.

Susan - ditto for me. Long term prosperity happens when there's a little win-win for everybody. RE: Henry Ford. He knew that if he actually had customers (like his workers) for his products, he could sell more. With those profits, he could hire more workers, who could in turn buy more cars, and so on....

Erin:
I thought I only spread the news !
Well Homes and Cars are indeed "luxuries" how about 2 and 3 cars?
Are you suggesting Renting or living in a home that you cannot afford is not luxury.
Well we have public paid transportation for those who cannot afford cars.
We have many public provided Homes for those who cannot afford a home.
Of course Liberals whould not want to demean someones pride, would they.
So throw out all the luxury component in the name of "Compassion"
Yes! Problem solved. Buy everyone who cannot afford what someone else has that item for "Free"
Soon we will have a country of "free" Home, car, insurance, etc.
With nobody working to support it.

I'm neither a Dem or Republican since I can't believe the choices that they generate for the public to vote.

With that, the US needs to put emphasis on large sector employers and companies based here in the US. Unfortunately through past administrations, from both parties, they have allowed too many companies and virtually industries to leave. No service oriented/focused government has ever succeeded in the world. You must control the means to produce or you are at the mercy of those who do.

And I see that Rog L needs to keep current...the LOAN was paid off in April 2010. Cash and stock. This was something worked out by both parties, the Bush administration started the bailout process and the Obama administration continued. GM stock has suffered all because of the problems in Europe, simply search and you'll see that both GM and Ford lost money due to the economic crisis overseas. But again, this was something worked out as acceptable payment by the US gov't and your politicians...regardless of your party affiliation. I do agree that bonuses should be limited when a company isn't doing well...HOWEVER, DO YOUR HOMEWORK...GM had record profits in 2011. That is why the bonuses.

You want to make the money that has not returned on the deal, maybe stop subsidizing nations that don't "like" America, but are quick to take handouts. And how about the middle east? People say that we went to secure oil...then why are prices so high? Hmm can you say special interest?

For Michigan (and America) one focus has to be jobs. We can't recover in what will be a service based economy, health care and IT. We need to produce and sell and people need to have the confidence and the income to buy. Michigan is particularly hurting and saving the jobs of the auto industry and expanding on what can be manufactured here is important to sustainability. I am glad they touched on the topic. I think however it needs to be discussed as a separate issue and not linked to others. I was not impressed with Granholm's delivery of comments and wished she had not been there. Overall the discussion of the auto industry was and is important and the more jobs we can bring back, the better for everyone regardless of party lines.

Jennifer Granholm for President! Before you fall off your chair, I was reading a CNN article on the convention praising how great a job our former govenor did in her speech, bacially lamenting that its to bad she was a Canadian and can't run for President.

This either shows you how cluesless these writers are or how biased their reportng is. Anyone from Michigan would laugh at the prospect after her disasterous tenure here, followed by her quick exit to the left coast and Berkely. I thought I could no longer be surprised. I was wrong....

Perhaps you might want to look at the big picture. Granholm became governor at a time when state taxes had been cut during the boom times of the nineties, with some of those cuts taking effect after she took office. As the auto industry declined (an international business whose welfare is not significantly affected by state policies), the state economy declined, increasing costs and decreasing revenues. She was in an impossible situation, as would have been the case with anyone who was governor during that period. The fate of Michigan is still tied to the fate of the auto industry in spite of fifty years of governors trying to diversify the state economy. If the auto industry does well, Snyder will look good. If it fails, Michigan will fail again no matter what the governor does. Outsiders appreciate these circumstances more than many Michiganders.

The grown ups are talking I.c. so maybe you can refrain from trying to talk over others.

But you want to speak of the Archbishop...he made a very intelligent decision to support both parties. The Church doesn't need to be alienating members over 1 issue that has shown not to be at the heart of turning around America. In fact, covering up child molestation by various clergy isn't very "Godly" either from what I would assume. And consider this...abortion IS LEGAL...regardless of your opinion. I know well educated people (unlike yourself) on both sides of the abortion issue and nobody that I can think of applauds the decision for someone to abort a birth. At the same time, how many children have you adopted? That seems to be the "answer" of many of those who are pro-life. While we're on that line of thought, I'm also assuming that you hold a very strong opinion on your gun rights. You don't want big gov't sticking it's nose into your "rights", but feel it is ok that they stick their nose into affairs when it doesn't affect you. Quite the hypocrite, don't you think?

Say No to War, Amnesty and Taxes. Say Yes to Limited Government, Secure Borders and Liberty.
For starters…
• Eliminate unconstitutional direct taxes on wages and salaries.
• Audit all Comprehensive Financial Annual Reports at federal level.
• Eliminate the Federal Reserve or at least the debasing of our currency via debt monetization.
• Encourage free trade with all nations and implement domestic energy independence.
• Remove industrial hemp from DEA control and create new jobs for Michigan in the automobile, agriculture, textiles, food and manufacturing industries!
• Eliminate the current military industrial complex to restore a strong national defense (not expand the current international offense).
• Restore a constitutional republic and the rule of law. Restore federal government role of protecting our natural individual rights instead of eroding them.
• Repeal the Patriot Act and NDAA.
• Withdraw all troops from the Middle East and around the world and re-position them to protect our borders instead.
• Withdraw the U.S.A. from the United Nations completely including Agenda 21 on a federal level.

Wait...no, let's just keep doing more of the same and expect different results.

For one, I don't understand the obsessed demagoguery of the GOP when it comes to former Governor Jennifer Granholm. If I were to fault her on anything is her desire to work in a bipartisan fashion and not understanding that the GOP would never let that happen.

Instead, the GOP in the state senate stalled every major initiative she brought to the table - all in an effort to destroy the state and the Democrats in the political arena. And, it worked. Too bad for Michigan which had to endure eight years of stalled progress as Lansing gridlocked.

For those who participated in these efforts, I'll say this: you violated your oath of office and your moral responsibility to the people represented.

Brad, you're sorely misinformed. You say voting for Obama assures poverty. Did you know that Obama has created more private-sector jobs in four years than Bush created during his ENTIRE term? And, Obama did it with NO HELP from the Republicans, who have obstructed his attempt to move this economy forward. Worse yet, the Republicans do this with total disregard for American citizens who need jobs--just so they can win back the White House. It's shameless.

You also said that we "need the wealthy" to pay for those in poverty. My friend, don't worry about the wealthy. They are doing fine. In fact, they are the ONLY sector of our society who've done phenomenally well in recent years, thanks to endless tax cuts from the Republicans--all while poor and middle class incomes have stagnated during that same period.

Brad, answer this: Is giving tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires smart use of YOUR money? If you believe that the benefits of cutting taxes will eventually trickle down to you and the middle class, you're in for a LONG wait. It just doesn't happen. In fact, we tried it under "W" and where did it lead us? It crashed our economy.

Brad, finally, were you aware that in modern times, twice as many jobs have been created under a Democrat president than a Republican one? It's true. Look it up.

In conclusion, please stop spouting off about things you know nothing about.

I am a social liberal/ fiscal conservative..Basically I have no party. If I were runnnig the republican party I would agree to a tax hike for millionaires and above. Its resally bad economics in a recession, but it wold take away their biggest talking point. People seem to be under the delusion that taxing the wealthly will fix the deficeit. It would barely dent it.

I am very turned off at President Obama's strategy to divide America just for votes. It the war on women, killing old people, etc, etc...whatever happened to uniting america. Romney has an excellant chance to pull this off. The economy is on the ditch. Todays jobs numbers were a disaster. Consider that the unempoyment rate went down slightly because 300,000 people quit looking. We generated 96K new jobs when it takes 150K just to break even due to population growth. Obama's 4.4 million new jobs don't count his first year in office...nothng like cherry picking numbers.

People vote their wallets and $4 gas and high unemployment will be the greatest challenge he ever faced

As far as Moley Granholm goes, she looked crazy. she keeps saying that BO saved the auto companies, but that's a lie. George Bush signed the bail out paperwork with a $17.4 billion dollar deal for GM and Chrysler. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1N5kRVfmMoE
I guess if you keep saying it enough and the media keeps things consistent long enough, people start to believe it. GM is going to file for bankruptcy again because their European sales have fallen way off. The taxpayers are already losing in the deal.

"I'm going to try the other guy" - We did Aaron, it was GWB. Romney promises to go back to EXACTLY those same economic policies + another 5 Trillion in more tax cuts (on TOP of Bush cuts) and doubling Defense. It's a "wait till I run the numbers after the election" as to when the budget will balance, which line items are cut to make it possible, and how that further depresses employment. It's a 'No Thanks' for me.

Blindly going for the "other guy" doesn't usually work so well. Especially when they want to just go back to what tanked us a few short years ago.

Don't feel bad, the Republican party left me too.

Obama Care-not good enough for him, the legislature or the unions-but good enough for me?
GM-$26 billion that will never be paid back. Forbes has predicted GM will go under 3-4 years. What then?
For, me it really comes down to the fact that we cannot keep printing and borrowing money from China. And this precisely what Obama intends to do.

Please look up any other source to satisfy your curious mind. I used those sites because they were convenient. There are plenty other articles that state the same thing.

The difference between many on this board and I is that I LIVED IN MA when Romney was governor. I have seen what he can do first hand. If I wanted to get the economy started I would go with a very successful business man and governor over our current lead from behind occupier of the white house.
Our debt and deficit is already killing us. Obama says he'll use the money to support the war to building bridges and highways. That money is being borrowed right now. Is an empty argument and most people know it. Each person owes $140,000 to pay of the problems we have.

Is it fair that people have made welfare a lifestyle versus working? I don't know about you, but I'm all for taking care of the sick and old, but able bodied people should be allowed a window to use welfare and then come off it. Entitlement reform is needed as well as auditing the spending in our country. I don't want to see my taxpayer money going to artists who get paid to put a cross ina jar of urine, but we pay it regardless if we agree with it. I will support what I know. The only other listing was on the debunking site Snopes - debunking email forwards, urban legends, conspiracy theories, etc. They exposed this theory as FALSE http://www.snopes.com/info/faq.asp. It doesn't help anyone right or left to propagate false stories.

Yes, I lived in MA as well. I've been a fan of Romney ever since his '94 run against Kennedy. I voted for Romney. Very familiar with his pol career, have read several of his policies such as Romneycare - successfully implemented + a fascinating document to read - completely modeled after Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act of '93 (R-Chaffee). Know of his successes and practices at Bain through friends in the financial industry, and a close relative that sold his company to Bain while Romney was there. I was hoping for McCain/Romney in 2008, but it didn't happen.

Unfortunately, he's been unable to run as the pragmatist he used to be, and will be unable to govern as such. And has remodeled his economic plan and core values according the fringe of the party. He has shown zero capacity to have an independent moment to stand up to this fringe at all on anything social or fiscal. Then, I read his 59 pt Plan. In short, the math doesn't work, and reads like a recipe to a double dip. Ryan's works, in 2040, but only with wild assumptions of 2% unemplyment. I must say all this has really alarmed me.

Aaron

Erin,

Nice name. Neither of the candidates are perfect, but I can see Romney making a major impact in a positive way. I have seen him work with others of varying political beliefs.
I have more hope of a brighter future with Romney in office. I think if he gets in, jobs will flow because he will make things easier for business to succeed. I would also bet that he gets them to bring corporate money back from PO boxes in low tax havens in Europe for a one time tax at a reasonable rate.
Like I said before, I'm not blind in this process. I would rather believe in a brighter future for all Americans versus coddling the 47% of those who continue to be on government assistance. Job growth will help people feel good about themselves again and give them self worth.
People have given up and they feel that there is no light at the end of the tunnel. The existing president wants to keep people under the government's thumb to ensure the voting base is tied to the democratic party.

Romney has my vote because he has talked about making America great again. Obama has old stale quotes that the public does not believe in anymore. He has been exposed as a big government President and out country needs a more nimble entity versus the bloated behemoth it has become.

Good bless everyone as they make their decision.

Aaron – I’m not picking on you, but I think you should see how some of your beliefs are based on opinion and hearsay, rather than fact.

“Obama's last proposal got voted down with no support from anyone in his own party.”
This was a offensive political stunt - the R’s submitted an outline of O’s budget -a nonsense version containing lists of titles and numbers only - no details – NOBODY could approve it. The only purpose was to embarrass POTUS, make for great propaganda, and waste taxpayer money and time. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/05/house-and-senate-unanimously-reject-obama-budgets-or-do-they/

"He operates by executive order versus working with the process." Obama has used 134, the LEAST number of EO’s going back to 1929. http://www.archives.gov/federal-register/executive-orders/disposition.html

The MOST EO’s? The last prez’s with terms during the last Depression –FDR gave 1155/term, Hoover 995. By comparison, this actually shows incredible RESTRAINT in use of EO’s, indeed FAVORING the legislative process, and reflecting his knowledge of, and respect for, the Constitution. As you say, he WAS a Constitutional professor.

"He is officially the worst President in the history of the US." Arguably, that would be W and Hoover –also, the last two businessman prez’s.

I don't imagine I would ever change your mind, and I know it's a personal decision, but thought you should know the details to your "facts."

If Obama gets elected again we'll all be worse off. Since he has come into office, there has been no budget and that doesn't have anything to with republicans. Obama's last proposal got voted down with no support from anyone in his own party. He was like the Lions 0-16! Even his own party knows his money management skills are terrible.
The Democratic led Congress has failed to close the check book and.we as taxpayers have suffered for it. By the way the house is led by republicans and Congress is led by democrats. On top of that Obama had super majority for his first two years.
Don't give me that republicans are the problem. Obama had to use the nuclear option to get his health care through. He operates by executive order versus working with the process. He is officially the worst President in the history of the US. He lacks the knowledge to make the economy go and how would he? He was a professor and community organizer in one of the most corrupt cities in the world. This has been one of the biggest disappointments or country had ever experienced. When he goes, it will be.for the better.

Another case of memory loss! The financial system collapsed after the 2008 election while Bush was at the helm. When Bush came into office when there was no federal deficit and a surplus created by the previous Democratic administration. It was Bush who started the whole ball rolling downhill.

Republicans were not the problem? And the current Republican Congress isn't the problem now?

Good Luck out there getting a job if Obama gets another 4 years. He has used our tax dollars to outsource oil, coal, automotive jobs, yes automotive jobs, as well as our technology to Russia & China (aren't these communist countries?). Romney is doing legally what a free man wants to do with his own money. He is not using ours and throwing away billions on energy that doesn't work instead of using our natural resources here. Obama wants to give the U.S. a smaller footprint in the world - using our money to do it! Wake up America!

You are not pulling FOR the United States. You are willing to burn it all down as long as there is no black man sitting in the Oval Office. That's all you have: fear and resentment. It even colors your vision - most rational commentators, even Republican commentators, thought Granholm's device of showing just how wide spread the benefit of saving the auto industry was effective. Your propensity for and almost worship of violence ("to punch them in the nose") is sick.

One additional benefit of President Obama's re-election will be the repudiation of these race baiting tactics and the rejection of a philosophy that rooting for the failure of the United States is a good thing. It isn't.

Accept the Fact: Obama-Care? There is No care in Obamacare-- IT IS A Health-TAX. Only Doctors, nurses, hospitals, Rx can provide health care.

Why shouldn't 26 year olds and pre-existing conditions be paid by those who want it. over 250mil people already have sufficient health care.
Let's just give anyoone who "Proves" they earn less than $20,000 the necessary $5,000 to buy thier own Health insurance.

That plan would save your "stupid" obama-TAX from all of us.
Anyone who votes for Obama because of the Health-TAx is a "hypocrite" to society.

There was welfare reform under President Clintons Presidency. Every president since President Roosevelt has wanted to establish a health care program for the country. The health insurance companies have raised rates too high, reject claims and cancell their customers. At that , no one would ever "WORK" in America ever.

Health care is a cost of lifestyle. Always has been.

Hence, you get Waste and rising prices.
That is why health care goes up, That is why Tuitions will NEVER stop going up.
Obama-Health-TAX is simply another TAX on society.
It will ZERO AFFECT on rising Health care --WHY?

Both sides of the spectrum have their talking points. Many of the things that have been discussed can be twisted to either side. The government is bloated and we do not have enough revenue to continue to grow entitlements including healthcare for EVERYONE.

When will we address that? The democrats have put forth no budget since BO has come to power. How does this continue? As far as Bill the cigar king, republicans controlled the purse strings and got the surplus.....not cigar boy.

The republicans kept Bill in check. He had to work with them. BO may use executive orders at a lesser rate, but the issues he bypasses are big.
Can we all agree that the spending needs to stop? Or are we so partisan that we can't even see that? I don't know about you, but I REFUSE TO LEAVE MY KIDS WITH A MESS LIKE THIS. I would like to see a flat tax and Everyone pays. No more freeloaders. It's time everyone has some skin in the game.

Comment_arrow

FHVoice

Ok, Aaron, valid questions. "Can we all agree that the spending needs to stop?"

The answer is yes. The question is when. Our national debt problem is subordinate to our employment problem, and addressing that by way of addressing a number of other national priorities is the alternative.

The GOP House sang a song about jobs - jobs, jobs, jobs - and then abandoned a jobs agenda because of the pact they made as the President took office: "do everything and anything to obstruct the progress of the country". Surely this kind of craven partisanship and failed focus should not be rewarded by returning them to power in any arena!

"I REFUSE TO LEAVE MY KIDS WITH A MESS LIKE THIS." This "mess" will not be fixed overnight. It is clear your kids will be dealing with some artifacts of this debt.

"I would like to see a flat tax" And I would like to see a more progressive tax. As to having skin in the game, virtually everyone does. Our problems don't derive from people not having skin in the game - had we stayed with the tax system in place in 2000, the projections would be very different. But we were taken on a wild ride, where the tax and regulatory policies proved toxic to our well being. Well, the well being of most of us. People like Romney? Not so much.

"No more freeloaders." Just what do you mean? Who are these freeloaders, and how much do they contribute to the deficit - or anything else? I'm really curious - I'm sure you are not refering to children, right?
...

Comment_arrow

FHVoice

...
Here's the rub: the case being made by the GOP today is "Yeah, we left the President a pretty bad economy (wish he'd stop reminding everyone). Nevertheless, the President has taken too long (3.8 years) to fix what we did (in 8 years) (and yeah, we had a lot to do with that, but shhhh), so you the voters (human and corporate) should fire him and let us back in to do (some say finish) the job."

... and then they offer a team whose approach is "We'll do better. We can't tell you specifically how. Elect us and we'll tell you." ("Paul Ryan admits 'We haven't run the numbers' on Romney-Ryan budget plan, but trust him, it's great" - http://goo.gl/JmDt5)

My children are already dealing with this mess. I refuse to make it worse - that's why I and many others will vote Obama/Biden 2012. I encourage you to do so too.

Why are so many Americans politically "illiterate"... why are so many Americans not understanding the real meaning of our Consitution, why are so many Americans not understanding what Socialisme has done to Western Europe.... May be our educators and the school systems agenda fell short...?
This is our country, our Consitution and the Government belongs to us, we don't belong to them...
When are we going to wake up and institute some real "change"...I hope soon..

Well Frank, after reading your post I would have to agree that your educators really did fall short. As far as Socialisme as you call it goes The Washington Post did a survey recently on who are the happiest people in the world and it turns out that people in those countries dominate the list:

Did you know that the constitution says that we have a right to pursue happiness?

GM- Corporation IS ALIVE!
It must be a "PERSON"

Yep- Bankrupcty coming again--"DEAD"
That make GM a "Person Corpse"

Or will it Get into a "marriage"? Maybe (Merger?)
What about a mixed Marriage? Maybe Amtrak marries GM.

Or (Same-Auto-mariage)-Corporation marriage---Gm marries-the subsidiary VOLT!

Wow! Is GM a Liberal?
GM is still getting major subsidy from Obama.
1) It does not have to pay taxes on it's profits for 10 years.
2) Every Volt sold gets GM a $9,000 checks from the Govt.
3) GM pays No interest on the loans.
4) GM will never pay back about $25Billion received to keep jobs of the highest paid workers in America.

AND BIDEN DECLARES GM IS ALIVE.

It will be history in 7 years. Without the subsidies, GM would be reporting Losses.
Wake up OHIO and Michigan, It's your Governor's who are turning your state around. Not Government-Motors.

Go! Jan & Sarah:
So much Truth in what you say.
I'll soon become history again after this election.
But, You guys are real Patriots. Keep speading the truth.
Maybe just one Major media outlet will come to tell all the people that
this country is not doing that well. The question should be "Is the Country better off than 4 years ago".
Why, because Public Service employees are doing just fine.

Paul Revere was a patriot. PaulRevere is not. The real Paul Revere did not waste time exalting the virtues of the East India Tea Company - a corporation - over the rights of human beings. In fact, he played a significant role in the defense of this country, rejecting rule by plutocrats of the day, and would never have rooted for our country to fail to advance the interests of partisan political hacks.

The writer here using Paul Revere's name in vain. Answering his missives (such as his regurgitating the same stuff on Sep. 8 & Sep. 10 for example) is like playing whack-a-mole. The only real answer for this kind of troll is to make sure his posts don't appear on the front page.

GM is alive?
GM is on a respirator.
Sadly, time to get real, end the hemorrhage and pull the plug.
