Exploring the Middle Eastern Custom of Threading at D'Lazo Salon

Threading offers a different salon option for those considering hair removal.

In need of a mini-makeover, I decided to try something a little bit different for this week's column.

I visited in Clawson to have my eyebrows threaded. Not waxed or plucked... but threaded.

But, what exactly is threading and why does it seem like such a frightening concept?

This ancient Middle Eastern hair removal technique involves the use of a pure, thin, twisted thread that is quickly rolled over unwanted hairs in the eyebrows, upper lip and other areas of the face such as sideburns and chin. Threading was originally performed to symbolize special occasions but recently it has gained widespread popularity in the United States.

Unlike waxing, threading will not cause irritation to sensitive skin. Threading also removes a line of hair at once, rather than one specific strand or area. Since the hair is pulled from the root, the more often you have the service done, the finer your hair will grow back due to the damage of the root. As an added bonus, threading also lasts longer than the other services.

But, how painful is it you ask?

In my personal opinion, I would describe threading as feeling like being shaved with a lead pencil. In other words, it was a strange feeling. However, it was just that— strange— and it did not hurt as bad as I was expecting, just a sort of numbing pain. When it was done, I had the perfect eyebrow arch just like I hoped and the threading technician was very helpful in explaining the procedure to me.

Not all salons offer threading because of the difficulty required to learn it. But right here in Clawson, D’Lazo charges $12 per area.

All in all, if you are looking for a small change and are still hoping to keep within a budget, threading is a fantastic choice.

D'Lazo Salon is located at 50 N. Main St. and is open Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. - 9 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. - 8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., and Sunday by appointment only. For more information, call 248-280-3822 or visit its website.
