Kindergarten Entry Age Changes for Clawson Schools
A recently enacted Michigan law changed the minimum age requirement for a child enrolling in kindergarten.
Plan on sending your child to kindergarten in Clawson for the 2013-14 school year? Here are some things you should know.
A recently enacted state law changed the minimum age requirement for children enrolling in kindergarten. The changes are set to take place over three years beginning at the start of the 2013-14 school year.
Currently, a child must be five years old before Dec. 1 to be eligible for kindergarten, but that has changed, according to the Michigan Pupil Accounting and Attendance Association (MPAAA):
- For the 2013-14 school year, children must be five years old by Nov.1.
- For the 2014-15 school year, children must be five years old by Oct. 1.
- For the 2015-16 school year, children must be five years old by Sept. 1.
Parents with children who are ineligible for enrollment according to the new standards, but will be five years old by Dec. 1, can apply for a waiver to secure enrollment, according to the MPAAA.

What is the reasoning behind these new age changes?!? With the last change of Sept 2015-16, no child will be ready for kindergarten?! Is this to keep more children in preschool? I never heard of this change on the news, etc?
WOW!

Michigan was one of the last states in the country to have a December cutoff. This puts us in line with the rest of the nation.

I wonder when it changed away from ? My Mom always said, it made her decision so much easier, having Jan. babies. also a teacher on the street says you don't have to go to Kindergarten. ?

To Haulin - There are only 3 other states in the nation that have December cut offs. The rest vary from August to October. I don't know when this change started, other than it has been a trend for the last 10 years or more. I know that the east coast has had earlier cut offs for some time now.
Kindergarten is not mandatory in Michigan. I believe there are only 13 states that consider kindergarten a mandatory grade.

Pre school is a money maker for the school district. Parents (especially first time parents) should under stand your child is born with blank sheet of paper, (& the genes) you have but 5 yr's to install your values, before Big brother Takes over. back in the day with January Babies, parents would with hold till the following Sept. Fall babies could start or be held back, that 6 months was precious to the bonding etc. also when the kids got to Driving age they were the oldest in their class........... or development in size, for sports etc. lust the way it was, now the parents are far to eager to push the kid out the door, remember 18 is closer then you think...... that age come very quickly in retro spect.

And what has Obama been running all over the USA "campaigning" from his SOTU speech?!? All this abrupt new interest in pre school!! But why?!? I am totally against these age changes! Yes, by 2016, almost every child will be starting a whole year behind now. I haven't met a toddler/child since my own went to preschool in 83 & 84, that has not gone to preschool! So many kids are actually bored with kindergarten because of what they have already learned in preschool or head start programs! This has set off many alarms with me, our goverment & another step with government control! Wake up ppl!

My children both had 2 years of preschool, and were not bored in kindergarten. Unless your child is reading at a fluent, first grade level or higher when they reach kindergarten, I am hard pressed to find a kid that is "bored" in kindergarten. My daughter has a little girl in her current kindergarten class that was reading "chapter books" upon entry to kindergarten. The teacher adjusted was able to give her more challenging work.
Clearly you have not been in a kindergarten class lately - as an 80's baby myself, like your own children, I now have a kindergartner....its not what it used to be. Kindergarten now is the new first grade. Teachers are expected to have the kids reading, doing addition & even learning early geometry concepts. Without preschool programs or serious dedication to learning at home (and, hopefully both), children cannot thrive in kindergarten.
Head start & preschool statistics are very clear. Kids that attend these programs are more likely to graduate from high school, more likely to go on to college, less likely to go to jail...it goes on & on. The military is currently turning away applicants because they don't meet the academic requirements. A general wrote a report recommending more early preschool & early intervention in our public schools to get kids on the right track early.

The age changes are very in line with nationwide trends. Michigan is one of three other states that have a Dec. cut off. Imagine your fall child competing with a spring baby that was "red shirted" (held back - which is very common, especially on the east coast) for a college spot, grant or scholarship. That other child is almost 2 years older!.

Assuming as a child ages they gain knowledge....it might seem the state is looking to push their MEAP scores higher if the the age of kids is higher as they go through all the grade levels. I cant think of any other reason why.

my point is why start so young? cause it means driving would start as a Jr. instead of as a sophomore , body changes start as a JR or senior, those going to College, will be on their own, gaining exper. away from their guardians. Boys and girls will be playing on the athletic field against, other schools (who start later) , your seniors will be playing against sophomores (body development wise) The school I coached at, they started their kids early, and in the eighth grade, we were trying to go up against kids who were shaving, while we were still talking with high pitch voices...... my Q-back was being mimic by Tigers, while we sounded like Canaries.... kids look like V W's, while the other team looked like Mack trucks.

All kids are different and I think it is per situation but I would rather have my kids ahead of the game rather than feeling like they have to play catch up.
I dont know any kids in kindergarten that are bored.

Not sure what catch up means, from my point of view. Put or start a male to soon, and he will always be trying to catch up physicality all the way thru H S, which leads to frustration. I think it should be a per situation, but I feel it come down to Bragging rites at the summer B B Q party, or an impromptu Mom's gathering on the front side walk...... as I have experienced ......... and listen to.

No one says your child "has" to go to preschool, it's simply a choice for many parents.
Also I am glad of the age changes. As an early childhood educator, putting a child into Kindergarten when your child is simply not ready is setting your child up for failure. Many kids who are 4 barely 5 when entering Kindy will be 1 year to 18 months behind emotionally and developmentally to children who are already 5 or even 6 when entering school. Both of my children are late fall birthdays and will both be 5 almost 6 when entering Kindy. I don't understand the rush of putting kids into school so early to begin with. I understand that many many families are financially motivated to put their child into school early, but even then their doing it at the cost of their child who may not be ready. If you ever watch a kindy classroom like I have, you will notice which kids are the younger ones and which ones are mature enough to handle such stimuli. But to each their own, the parents will have to deal with the consequences if they decide to put their child in school before they are emotionally and physically ready to handle a school environment.

That is my point, fall babies are still one quarter of yr. ahead of the Jan. babies, who had to wait till Sept to enter.......... back in the day, I notice this cause I had siblings who were all Jan Babies................ my Mom would say, (her babies are ready for school), now like a good pot roast, you let it (kids) stand and simmer ........ they will let you know when they are ready......... the extra 6 mo's, did wonders. as I coached I could see the difference whan we had a young (for yr)vs old for yr. (yet still in side the guide lines) it does make a difference.... all the way through the school yr's, not after wards.

catch up means exactly what it sounds like, I would rather my kids have more experience when going into KG at the age of 5 than feeling like they arent ready and have to catch up to the rest of the kids.
And I dont know what bragging moms you are listening to but the people I surround myself with are interested in their kid and what they are doing and how we can help as parents.
Haulin you can stir the pot all you want but if you slow down and READ Sherry and I are agreeing with you...

I don't have a dog in the fight, lol, not stirring the pot, I believe a child is not forced to go to Kindergarten in Michigan. The Moms I Hear if you read, are on the side walk. lol Don't you just love it when your little finger accidentally(two ways to spell) hits the Caps lock key .............. That boom yesterday, was not a gas explosion, it was this carriesharry Tag team, actually agreeing with a has been........ lol welcome aboard ......... as it was back in the day...... that formed the greatest generation ever.....

I need to keep reminding myself to ignore you and youre "glass is half empty / I need a translator" comments all the time.
Simply put, not worth it.
As for the gas explosion, shame on you for making a joke about that, someone lost their life.

That is pretty liberal to say I was making fun of some one dying in the explosion , I was not making fun of the death, which most did not know right away, I was eluding to the resounding noise and that is all. no guilt trip Here. fir sure. I was making light of all your postings, your penchant to have the final word.
