Leon & Lulu Shares Plans for Vacant Building Next Door

'The Show at Leon & Lulu' will offer coffee, baked goods, fun and of course popcorn, the owner of the popular Clawson business says.

It’s been months since Leon & Lulu bought the vacant old movie theater next door and plans are starting to take shape for the 14 Mile Road building.

“It’s going to be called The Show at Leon & Lulu," owner Mary Liz Curtin said.

The Clawson Theater was built in 1941 – the same year as the roller rink that houses Leon & Lulu – and the last film was shown in about 1962, according an October news release.

The building has also been used as a warehouse, café and light industrial site but has been vacant in recent memory. Plans for the 7,800-square-foot site include replacing the marquee and restoring the building for retail use as well as embracing the history and the spirit of “The Show,” as the locals called it, the release stated.

“Plans are definitely in the works. We painted it as soon as we got it, and we’re working on the design right now,” said Curtin, who runs the popular unique home and gift shop.

“We know for sure that there’s going to be coffee served and a bakery of some kind up front. The back, we’re still working on, but it’ll be fun and there will be popcorn.”

Since acquiring the building, Curtin said, some of the original prints were unearthed and many of these original design aspects, such as paint color and plaster details, are certain to be incorporated into The Show at Leon & Lulu's decor.

Also, there are plans in the works to try and re-create the building's marquee, Curtin added.

Clawson residents and visitors can expect to see renovations to and construction on the building begin in the spring and early summer months.

Curtin said she hopes the project will be complete by late summer.
