This photo, taken in 2009, shows what the Clawson Theater and Ambassador Roller Rink buildings are today. The roller rink is now Leon & Lulu, a homestyle retail store, and the theater is now an empty building used for storage.

This week's historical photo is of the old Clawson Theater and Ambassador Roller Rink, both of which stood on West 14 Mile Road west of Main Street.

According to Melodie Nichols, curator for the Clawson Historical Museum, the theater opened in 1941 and operated through the late 1950s. The theater building is now used for storage. The roller rink, built in 1941 for $11,000, closed in 2005 and the building now houses Leon & Lulu.

I was wondering if anyone has copies of the kids that were on the speed skating team @ Clawson Roller Rink. My sister was on the team and Im trying to locate some of the old photos for her. Please let me know who I could contact.

The boy in the photo is not an actor- he is a local boy delivering newspapers. Not sure where the confusion came from. The movie on the marquee is a Bowery Boys movie, but that is not Leo Gorcey on the bicycle.
Jill, the museum doesn't have any photos of the speed skating team - have you tried contacting Mary Liz and Leon & Lulu? Does anyone else out there have photos?

How come there is no mention or old photographs of the old Malone lumber yard. As a kid I bought nails for my "tree houses" there. At one time they also used to sell coal. I went to Guardian Angels Catholic grade school in the sixties. "Sids drug store" used to get alot of attention from GA's church because they sold "skin books". LOL !!!

James,
we do have a few photos of Malone Lumber, and of Sid's too. Funny, I never thought about Sid's selling those magazines! Malone Lumber was around since the 1930s, a true Clawson landmark!
