POLL: Are You Glad or Sad Winter is Wimpy So Far?
Halfway through the season, we've had little snowfall and averaged 30 degrees.
Show of hands: Who went out without gloves this week or rode with a car window open?
You're not alone. January just went out like a lamb, a two-months-early calendar twist that's unusual here. So is an average Metro Detroit winter temperature of 30.7 degrees, six weeks into the season, and snowfall barely above nine inches – compared to nearly 18 inches in January 2011.
"It is surprising," National Weather Service meteorologist said this week from the monitoring station at White Lake. It recorded a Tuesday reading of 56 degrees and forecasts high temperatures of 40-44 degrees through Monday.
In Rochester, unseasonal weather won’t stop a Snow Daze benefit for the Animal Care Network this Saturday afternoon. "We plan to host our annual Snow Daze Charity Softball Game whether there is snow or not," this Patch listing says.
But the warm and snowless weather has forced the cancellation of several other winter-themed festivals, including the West Bloomfield Winter Fest and the Winter Carnival in Oakland Township as well as the rescheduling of downtown Rochester's Fire & Ice Fest.
How you feel about current conditions may depend on whether you're a winter sports enthusiast or someone who's eager to stash the boots, parkas, hats and shovel.
So which is it: Do you hope for more of the same this month or at least one real reminder that we live near the country's northern rim?
After voting in the poll, please post a comment telling what you like most or least about this season's opening half. Have you enjoyed a motorcycle, bike or convertible, maybe even golfed? Does your family miss sledding, skating, skiing or snowmobiling?
Will you hesitate to pay a seasonal rate for plowing again? Are lower heat bills a lucky break in tight times?

Thumbs up on this 2011/2012 winter. We've golfed in January and enjoyed safer walks and drives.

On the days that it's sunny, yes. Those days that it rains, however? I'd rather have snow. Cold and rainy is drearier than cold and snowy. But overall, this winter gets a thumbs up.

While I'm enjoying it now, I do wonder if our lakes will be way down this summer.

I'm concerned about the impact the continual temperature fluctuation between freeze and thaw is having on our roads. I would love it if it stayed in the 40s, and I wouldn't mind it if the winter was constant in the 20s, but everytime it goes from one to the other, it makes me think that the money not being spent on snow removal and salting is going to have to go towards extra road repairs next summer.

Loving it!!!! In my opinion, this is the PERFECT winter. A couple of inches of snow at a time, then it all melts within a couple days. I've been out birding more than usual and have seen some great birds. Although I have to say that I could do without the muddy roads (I live on one of them.)

It's a huge bummer! Santa brought snowboards this year for Christmas and they are not getting any use :(

I'm hating it! Im a sledder, snowmobiler, ice fisher... Can't enjoy it when it's like this outside. I love the cold, seeing it warm like this is kinda depressing. I like each season at its own time... Winter is supposed to be cold and snowy when you live in Michigan. Kinda sad it looks like we went from fall to spring with 4 inches of snow in between.

I prefer having 4 distinct seasons. This winter has mostly been like a chilly spring. If I didn't want to see snow and cold weather in winter, I'd live down south or out west. For those of us who enjoy winter, it's a year until we get another shot at one - and that's disappointing.

I have always loved everything about my home state with ONE exception - the long, snowy, horribly cold winters. While I worry about the effects this could have on the environment and agriculture, the selfish part of me wishes that every Michigan winter could be like this one!

What am I to do with a gallon of gasoline and oil mix? I won't put my. snowblower away until June 1st. You never know in Michigan.

This is my idea of a Michigan winter weather heaven.

Personally, I don't go out very often, so the mild weather hasn't made much of a difference to me. However, I feel kinda bad for all the folks who rely on winter for their livelihood, and those who enjoy the snow. There are a bunch of snow-toys that aren't being used this year. Kids of all ages like their toys:-)

It is Michigan...we expect and look forward to 4 seasons. I feel like we are being cheated out of one of them this year.

All things considered this hasn't been such a bad winter so far. That being said, Michigan still has four seasons...May, June, July , and winter.....so mild or not, it's still winter. Blech!

Ooops, I should have said June, July August and winter. Nonetheless, winter stinks!

I'm loving it so far. I almost bought a snowmobile at the beginning of winter. I'm glad I held off. The snowblower is still sitting there unused. We were able to do some outdoor work at the cottage that I thought I'd have to wait for spring to do. I've tilled up a portion of my backyard twice to get it ready for new grass seed. This is the first time in my fifty some years that I can remember a winter like this.
