What: With increasing poverty levels in Southeast Michigan and Oakland County, Lighthouse of Oakland County is ramping up efforts to stock its shelves at its emergency services food pantry. “We’re making it easy and attractive for people to donate this weekend,” said Priscilla Perkins, Chief Development Officer. Simply bring four cans, boxes or cartons of non-perishable food this weekend and receive $5.00 off of admission to the Michigan Renaissance Festival on Saturday, Aug. 30th, Sunday, Aug. 31st and Monday, Labor Day Sept. 1st. For information on the food drive, please click here: http://www.lighthouseoakland.org/Joomla/index.php/events.
Why: “The need is great, and it is growing,” said Perkins. A 2013 Associated Press study found that the U.S. Poverty Rate hit 15.7%, the highest level since 1965, while Data Driven Detroit reported that Southeast Michigan experienced a 48% increase in individuals living in poverty from 2000 to 2010.
