Where Do Oakland County’s Wealthiest and Poorest Residents Live?

Oakland County has some of the most elite ZIP codes in Michigan, but is also home to families in Pontiac and Hazel Park who are barely getting by.

A new list from the Washington Post ranks Huntington Woods’ 48070 ZIP code as one of the wealthiest in Michigan. But in some other parts of sprawling Oakland County, families are living on the edge.

Huntington Woods is included in the elite class of “Super ZIPs,” a term coined by American Enterprise Institute scholar and author Charles Murray to describe the country’s most prosperous, highly educated demographic clusters. On average, they have a median household income of $120,000 and seven in 10 adults have college degrees.

Huntington Woods scored a 98 on a 0-99 ranking that measured median household income and the number of college-educated adults living in the household.

Huntington Woods residents have a median household income of $$109,946 and 76 percent of adults are college graduates.

The rankings are based on 2010 Census data.

  • Beverly Hills (48025) had a ranking of 97 with a median household income close behind Huntington Woods at $109,088, but the percent of adults with college degrees was 69 percent.
  • Rochester/Oakland Township (48306) had a ranking a 96 with an median household income of $118,146, but a lower percentage of college graduates, with only 60 percent of adults holding college degrees.
  • Pleasant Ridge (48069) also had had a ranking of 96 with a median household income of $107,750, but also had a lower percent of college graduates – 64 percent – than Huntington Woods.
  • Birmingham (48009), also with a ranking of 96, neared Huntington Woods with the percent of adults with college degrees – 73 percent – but median household income was $100,473.
  • Bloomfield Hills (48304) had a ranking of 96 with a median household income of $102,422 and 67 percent of adults with college degrees.

  • West Bloomfield (48323) with a rank of 94: Median household income was $110,434 and 56 percent of adults had college degrees.
  • Troy (48084) with a rank of 91: Median household income was $80,707 and 67 percent of adults had college degrees. Troy’s other ZIP code (48083) had a rank of 74 with median household income of $62,606 and 42 percent of adults with college degrees.
  • Novi (48375) with a rank of 89: Median household income was $82,975 and 55 percent of adults had college degrees.
  • Rochester Hills (48309) with a rank of 89: Median household income was $85,333 and 52 percent of adults had college degrees.
  • Northville (48167) with a rank of 87: Median household income was $78,946 and 51 percent of adults had college degrees.
  • Oakland Township (48363)  with a rank of 86: Median household income was $96,635 and 40 percent of adults had college degrees.
  • Rochester (48307) with a rank of 79: Median household income was $66,640 and 47 percent of adults had college degrees.
  • Berkley (48072) with a rank of 78: Median household income was $67,217 and 44 percent of adults had college degrees.
  • Lake Orion Township (48362) with a rank of 78: Median household income was $75,724 and 37 percent of adults had college degrees.
  • Southfield (48076) with a rank of 78: Median household income was $66,326 and 44 percent of adults had college degrees.

  • Pontiac (48342) with a ranking of 2: Median household income was $20,398 and 7 percent of adults had college degrees
