2011 Flashback: George Clooney Comes to Clawson

The movie star brought Hollywood to the small city with a big heart.

Yes, celebrities do come to Clawson. At least, George Clooney and Ryan Gosling did.

On March 18, we covered the Hollywood fever that took place along 14 Mile Road as film This was, in fact, one of the most-read stories this year.

The Ides of March is a political drama about a presidential campaign starring Clooney as Gov. Mike Morris; Gosling as Stephen Meyers; and Marisa Tomei as Ida Horowicz. It was .

"It's our claim to fame," Mayor Penny Luebs said of the movie. "I'm thrilled."

Crews shot scenes at Nick's Country Oven and the Oak Professional Center along 14 Mile. The movie set attracted hundreds of people from throughout the area, snapping photos of Clooney as he waved to the crowds a few times.

Many residents checked out the movie just to see their small city on the big screen.

"I think the film has a real shot at winning an Oscar," said Janna Bissett, a Clawson resident who was an extra in the film.

The Ides of March made about $40.5 million in theater ticket sales and is set to be released on Blu-ray and DVD on Jan. 17. The film has been nominated for a Glolden Globe award for best motion picture, drama.
