Clawson Flag Store Is the Star of Main Street Right Now

American Flag and Banner in Clawson experiences its busiest time of year every Independence Day, when folks buy flags and just about anything else with a flag on it.

Near the Fourth of July, Americans see stars and stripes everywhere they go, and patriotism reaches an annual eclipse.

The desire to wave the red, white and blue makes this the busiest time of the year for companies such as in downtown Clawson.

The Fourth of July and the warmer weather in general bring in an abundance of people to the store, which has been a fixture on Main Street since 1980. Some people seek flags and poles, while others go for clothing and other various decorations that have the American Flag  displayed on them.

“We’re all really busy and working longer hours,” said Bill Miles, owner of American Flag and Banner. “But, we’re used to it every year.”

Though the store sees steady business commercially year-round, Miles believes that the retail store itself may continue to prosper significantly over the next few months, due to the upcoming 10th anniversary of 9-11.

American Flag's Miles said he plans for the business to remain in its same location on Main Street well into the future.

“It’s a small-town atmosphere and we have a small-town product that we sell,” Miles said. “The community is also very oriented; Clawson has one of the biggest Fourth of July parades around.”

is located at 28 S. Main S. Hours of operation are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, but the store is open for extended hours 9 a.m. to noon Saturday for last-minute flag shoppers on the holiday weekend.
