South Main Beauty Supply Known for Customer Service, Prices

With hair and nail care galore, good prices and product knowledge is key at this downtown Clawson store.

Proper hair, nail and all around beauty care is abundant in the heart of downtown Clawson at .

Redken, Nioxin, Paul Mitchell, Bed Head and dozens of other hair product brands cover the majority of one wall of the store, while the rest is stocked with nail files, brushes, blow dryers, curlers, hair dye and more. Store owner Barry Glushyn said he offers varieties in each product because for women, it's all about having options.

Embracing the beauty industry

For more then 40 years Glushyn has been making a name for himself in the beauty industry and still loves what he does. Though he is married, he said the best part of his job is being able to “take money from beautiful women.”

“A lot of women say it’s fun shopping here,” he said. “It’s a cool little store.”

Glushyn chuckled when he shared the story behind the beauty supply shop he has owned for 26 years. He said when he was a young lad attending Ferris State University, he switched into beauty school because he had a crush on a girl taking the course. Once she was out of the picture, and program, he decided to continue with that path and held positions in management for Hudson’s and a salesman for Sally Hansen.

Glushyn said the store was originally located down the street from its current location on Main Street. After being at the original location for five years, he moved the store to 45 South Main Street.

Making it in a small community

With years of beauty supplies knowledge, the store has been successful in part because Glushyn knows how to properly stock his store.

Some of his more popular products include the Dioxin line, hair color and OPI nail polish, but Glushyn said customers come in for a little bit of everything.

Glushyn said he believes his customers keep returning to the store because of the competitive prices and knowledge of the products. Troy resident Sandra Glover, who frequents the store for hair spray and OPI products, agreed.

“They have good service and I like their prices," Glover said. "They’re very helpful."

Though Glushyn has a manager that works in the store at times, he is the one onsite most days. Glover said she loves his personality.

“He’s funny and just a sweetheart,” Glover said.

Having similar relationships to the one he has with Glover is something Glushyn strives for with all of his costumers. He enjoys taking the time to get to know everyone that walks through the door and engaging in conversations about the products. Through the years, Glushyn said he has stayed on top of all of the beauty journals, knowing when hot products are out and what’s most effective in the industry.

“Because I’m licensed and know what I’m talking about, I can talk customers through how to get the color they want, or what hair color goes with what skin tone,” he said.

People come in seeking his expertise all the time, Glushyn said. For example, a customer recently had a problem attempting to dye her hair grey because the color just wasn’t sticking. Glushyn was able to suggest Ardell Gray Magic to solve her problem.

Serving peak times

The store is usually slow during the day, but picks up after 5 p.m. Holidays are the busiest time for the store because women are getting all dolled up and running into South Main Beauty Supply for numerous products. Glushyn said his customer base also includes people who work in the hair industry. They tend to buy products from his shop because of the large selection and good prices, he said.

“Nail techs and hair stylist drop in a lot when they need something because they know they’ll get it cheaper here,” he said.
