Before Kenwood parents go to the polls on November 6, Kenwood students will have the opportunity to vote on some important election choices of their own. Kenwood students have kicked off their own election series and have successfully proposed two issues for the upcoming Kenwood School Nov. 5 ballot.
An assembly on Friday jump started all the election activities. Mayor Penny Luebs spoke to the student’s about the importance of having a voice and voting. She then announced the proposals that will appear on Kenwood’s ballot. The students were excited about the opportunity in the following weeks leading up to the election to campaign and rally support for the choices that will appear on the November 5 ballot. Results will be shared with the students Wednesday, November 7.
Students will be voting on which endangered animal the school supports and adopts and the movie selection that will be shown at December’s Family Movie Night event. Kenwood will also hold their own mock election and vote for their favorite candidate for President.
Student Council representatives initiated the issues that would appear on the ballot. Information gathering, voting and rallying in individual classrooms determined the movies that Kenwood students wanted to see at the December movie night. Student Council representatives tallied these choices and made the final decision of which top 3 movies will appear on the school’s November ballot.
Student Council also opened the vote up to the students to choose which Detroit Zoo animal Kenwood students will adopt and support for the year. The animals that are up for adoptions will also appear on the school’s ballot.
And of course, when we are in the midst of a Presidential election year, it wouldn’t be fair to not include the student’s choice for President; even though their vote won’t be heard along-side our country’s 24 million registered voters.
Kenwood’s hallways are buzzing with election hype. Campaign posters supporting the different issues and candidates are already in full force. Everything looks so patriotic that it’s hard not to get excited.
Kids, teachers and parents are all getting involved with the political process while giving the students a hands-on approach to learning about the rights and privileges of being an U.S. citizen. Students are learning about the decision making process, will get an opportunity to voice their opinions in a positive manner and see first-hand how their vote can make a difference.
