Grab & Go Kids Planner: May 4-10

Head to the library for origami crafts and preschool storytime or get inspired by the School Children's Art Exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts - pick and choose from this week's array of family events.

1. Origami at Your Library

Why go: Ming Louie will be at the library to guide us through the basics of origami techniques.

2. Preschool Storytime

Why go: Children ages 3-5 will listen to and participate in stories, rhymes and songs. Adults must stay with their children.

3. Cheddar’s Preschool Story Time

Why go: Join Cheddar the Mouse listening to a tale about May Flowers. Make a simple craft and have a treat. It’s for children ages 2-5 and an adult.

Where: Troy Museum & Historic Village, 60 West Wattles, Troy

When: 10:30-11:15 a.m. Wednesday

Cost: $3 adults, free for children

4. Mom and Kids Apron

Why go: This is a great Mother’s Day present. Three sessions with your mom, learning how to read a pattern, how to sew on a sewing machine, and coming out with an apron.

Where: Haberman Fabrics

When: 10:15 a.m.-1:15 p.m. Saturdays, May 7-21

Cost: $75

What else: The children must be ages 8-11

5. Detroit Public Schools Student Exhibition

Why go: Your kids will be inspired to create when you look at the winning painting, sculpture, pottery, drawing and mixed media made by school kids in Detroit Public Schools, grades K-12.

Where: Detroit Institute of Arts, 5200 Woodward Avenue, Detroit

When: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, April 30-June 5

Cost: Free with museum admission, $8 adults, $4 children ages 6-17

What else: If you’re going on the weekend, be sure to create at the noon-4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays Drop-In Art Workshop and check out the 2 p.m. Sunday Family Fare.
