UPDATED: Heat Advisory and Thunderstorm Watch in Effect

Temperatures reached the lower 90's today; thunderstorms possible this evening.

In addition to the heat advisory issued today, there is a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until midnight.

The National Weather Service predicts the storms could be severe with damaging winds at 70 miles per hour.

"Large hail greater than one inch in diameter and isolated tornadoes are also possible," the weather service says.

With temperatures reaching the 90s today, the National Weather Service issued a heat advisory and is warning residents to be careful.

We're not yet used to the heat this early in the season, so a second consecutive day of hot temperatures now can be hazardous to people prone to heat stress or others engaged in strenuous outdoor activity.

Temperatures rose into the lower 90s this afternoon and the "real feel" is expected to climb into the upper 90s by mid- to late afternoon.

The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible, the NWS says.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room and stay out of the sun.

Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances, of course. And it's a good idea to check on relatives and neighbors who might be negatively affected.

The Clawson Athletics office says the game is still on for girls varsity soccer districts at 6 p.m.
