First it was the Motor City, now it's Hockeytown. But in between, it was Motown— the land of hit songs that weren't too long. The documentary in this week's picks offers a crash course in the Motown era of Detroit.

Much of Detroit is fairly dilapidated. We can blame most of that on the riots of 1967 that saw the city burn. It would be hard to imagine the chaos back then, but one pick below gives first-hand accounts of what it was like living in Detroit during that time.

2. Detroit Then and Now (Then & Now) (Book) - Author Cheri Y. Gay offers a look at the evolution, or devolution in many places, of Detroit and it's buildings. 3. Wonders Among Us, Celebrating 75 Years of the Detroit Zoo (Book) - The Detroit Zoological Society put out this book that takes readers through the years as the Detroit Zoo has grown. Filled with original photos of the first version of the zoo all the way to today's innovative exhibits.

4. Standing in the Shadows of Motown (DVD) - Motown put out more hits that one might believe and much of that success rested on the shoulders of the Funk Brothers. This compelling documentary combines talking heads of past greats along with reenactments and original footage.

5. Eyes on Fire: Witnesses to the Detroit Riot of 1967 (Book) Author Heather Buchanan assembled this book of first-hand accounts of the most devastating disaster in Detroit's history. The book isn't out to inform, but to offer a glimpse of what it was like surviving the ordeal.
