Library Picks: Books and Films Spread Awareness of Earth Day

Celebrate Earth Day with library books about protecting our planet, global warming and more.

It's very popular to "go green" these days (and no, I don't mean become a Spartans fan). People are changing their habits to improve our planet's environment. "Recycle, reuse, and repurpose" has been a common slogan for improving the Earth.

Earth Day is a holiday dating back to 1970 that promotes this general idea. In celebration of Earth Day this Friday, here are this week's library picks of books and films from .

  1. Earth Day (Celebrations in My World) (Book) - Aimed at kids ages 4-8, this book by author Molly Aloian is dedicated to spreading awareness and informing young readers about Earth Day and what they can do to celebrate and help protect our planet.
  2. The Earth Book (Book) - Written by author Todd Parr, The Earth Book  explores a list of simple activities that everyone from kindergartners to parents can perform to improve and protect our environment along with explanations on how these activities can impact our world.
  3. Hot, Flat and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution--and How It Can Renew America (Book) - By No. 1 best-selling author Thomas L. Friedman, this book looks at two American problems (our loss of national purpose since the 9/11 attacks and the environmental crisis) and his proposed solutions.
  4. An Inconvenient Truth (Film) - This Academy Award-winning documentary directed by Davis Guggenheim follows former Vice President Al Gore's attempt to educate Americans about global warming.
  5. Planet Earth (TV Series on DVD) - Planet Earth is the first nature documentary filmed in HD and the most expensive nature documentary ever produced by the BBC. This series of documentaries, often seen on the Discovery Channel, has been described by its makers as "the definitive look at the diversity of our planet".
