Library Picks: Father's Day, Jaws Anniversary, Garfield's Birthday and More

Library selections for the week of June 19 - June 25.

Library Director Elizabeth Gulick and librarian Jenni Gannod and chose a few books from the shelves of to commemorate some upcoming birthdays and a holiday.

Father's Day is Sunday, which is also Lou Gehrig's birthday, the professional baseball player, friend of Babe Ruth and sufferer of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which was also named the Lou Gehrig's disease. And don't forget about Garfield the Cat's birthday on June 19 as well.

June 20 is a day of celebration for fans of classic films like Spielberg's under water monster masterpiece Jaws which came out on this day in 1975.

June 23 brings us the birthday of Alfred Kinsey, the man with a scientific passion who turned his sights on human sexuality and changed society's general view and common knowledge on the subject.

  1. Jaws (VHS) - One of the defining films of the summer blockbuster style, Jaws is a masterpiece of suspense early in the career of Steven Spielberg. With an all-star cast featuring Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss, and a story based on the best-selling novel, Jaws has become a cornerstone of American cinema.
  2. Jaws (CD) - Ba dum... Ba dum... Ba dum, ba dum, ba dum, ba dum... One of the most ominous and unforgettable themes of all time was composed for Jaws by contemporary orchestral master John Williams. It is famous for scores such as E.T. The Extraterrestrial, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
  3. Father's Day (Holidays, Festivals, & Celebrations) (Book) - Author Ann Heinrichs and illustrator R.W. Alley composed this children's book to highlight the annual celebration of Father's Day.
  4. Luckiest Man: The Life and Death of Lou Gehrig (Book) - Jonathan Eig penned this biography, offering an in-depth look a Lou Gehrig's life from his baseball career and unique relationship with Babe Ruth and his final years dealing with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as the Lou Gehrig's disease.
  5. Garfield: Bigger Than Life (Book) - Jim Davis' lovable curmudgeon of a cat, Garfield, stars in this collection of some of his classic comic strips.
  6. Kinsey (DVD) - A star-studded cast of Liam Neeson, Laura Linney, Chris O'Donnell, Peter Sarsgaard and Timothy Hutton highlight this biopic of the infamous Alfred Kinsey who revolutionized the understanding of human sexuality. Written and directed by Bill Condon.
