This week's Library Picks focus on the upcoming Memorial Day on Monday May 30.

Memorial Day is Monday and in tribute, we have dedicated our Library Picks to promote awareness of our fallen military men and women. Check out these picks from recommended by Librarian Jenni Gannod. Read about tales of bravery, love and loss, as well as inspiring and tragic historical accounts and images.

  1. The War: An Intimate History, 1941-1945 (Book) - Authors Geoffrey C. Ward and Ken Burns created this book as a companion to Burns' PBS series from September 2007. The book focuses on the lives of citizens of four towns rocked by WWII making use of stunning original photographs and maps.
  2. Love Stories of World War II (Book) - Compiled by Larry King, who also offers a short introduction in each of these short stories, this book details courtship, affairs and love amidst turmoil in American history. Fifty couples in all, Love Stories of World War II retells their romances during, ending and/or due to WWII using original photographs, letters and mementos.
  3. The Wall (Book) - This children's book by Eve Bunting tells of a young boy who visits the Vietnam Memorial to look for the boy's grandfather's name. With watercolor illustrations and moving prose, this story tackles tough concepts such as pride, longing and loss.
  4. American Experience: Fly Girls (DVD) - From the PBS series American Experience, this documentary about the Women's Air Force Service Pilots (or WASPS) uses archival footage, interviews and recreations to explore the history of these brave women who lead the way for other women in the military.
