Girl Scout Troop Fulfills Need at Clawson Food Pantry

A Girl Scout troop visited the on Monday afternoon to stock its shelves with much-needed food and toiletries for families.

The 12-member troop of 7- and 8-year-old girls donated apple juice, spaghetti sauce, canned chicken, tuna and bath soap to the pantry located in the basement of .

Pantry director Linda Ingersoll said the donations made a huge impact on the food pantry because stock was running low.

"I didn't know if we would be able to open this week," Ingersoll said. "We were struggling to get everything we needed."

Ingersoll said the number of families who receive food from the pantry has increased since the beginning of the year. When the pantry first opened in October it was averaging five-six families at each food drive, now it's averaging 12-14 families. Ingersoll said she believes rising gas prices could be a factor in this.

Girl Scout troop leader Rebecca Tews said the girls used money donated from the Kohl's Cares volunteer program to purchase the items.

"We wanted to give back to the local community," Tews said.

Tews took the girls to the store together to purchase all the items and they unloaded and stocked the food pantry Monday evening.

Food pantry volunteers host food drives for families on the second and fourth Monday of every month from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Families can stop by during this time and pick up a food package.

Ingersoll said the food pantry receives most of its donations from the church, and could always use donations from the community.
