Fireworks

Be Careful, Be Safe, Be a Good Neighbor

The 4th of July is our country's Independence Day and it is a signature event in Clawson with family friendly events of music in the park, coney day, an ice cream social, a kiddie parade, fire truck rides, beautiful baby contest, button contest and a freedom run all as a prelude to the parade, arts and crafts, fair and fireworks at Clawson Park on July 4th.  I'm going to take this opportunity to speak about fireworks.  We are able to enjoy the fun activities when we abide by a Fireworks Safety Act.  In 2012 the State of Michigan approved the sale, possession and use of "consumer fireworks" of bottle rockets, roman candles, firecrackers and what we refer to as high impact fireworks.  The outcome of the newer legislation has been a great increase in noise and safety issues in Clawson around the holiday. Clawson homes are close to one another and fireworks are unpredictable when ignited.   As a result, our Council passed an ordinance to allow low impact fireworks such as sparklers, fountains, snakes, poppers and other novelties and not allow high impact fireworks.  Please be mindful of your safety and of your neighbor and be considerate and careful when using fireworks.  On the same note, Clawson has a burn ordinance allowing fire pits no less than 10 feet from any structure and no less than 18 feet from any boundary.  Again - be neighborly and considerate of respiratory problems in your neighborhood.  Thank you for your attention!
