UPDATED: Clawson Woman Dies in Freak Accident

Police say the woman was run over by her own vehicle Monday.

A 65-year-old Clawson woman died Monday evening after being run over by her own car in the parking lot of .

Clawson police say they found the woman trapped under her 2003 Pontiac Vibe at about 7 p.m. and firefighters had to lift the vehicle off the woman.

Clawson Det. Lt. Scott Sarvello said she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sarvello said police are investigating whether she was walking away from the vehicle or walking in front to get to the driver's side. The vehicle was in drive mode when the incident occurred and police had to switch it to park, Sarvello said.

A witness reported seeing the woman walk out the apartment building with a grocery cart that she placed inside her vehicle.

"It's pretty bizarre," Sarvello said. "It's pretty sad for the family that something like this happened."

The woman's vehicle will be evaluated to determine whether mechanical issues were a factor in the accident. Sarvello said someone told police the woman usually started her car underneath the hood. 

"We are still piecing that together," he said.

Police have not yet released the woman's name.
