City Council Adopts One-Year Budget, Approves Mojave Liquor License

A recap of the City Council meeting on Tuesday evening at City Hall.

The Clawson City Council on Tuesday adopted a $6.6 million budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2012, through June 30, 2013. The adopted budget includes the budgets of all city departments plus the general fund, retiree services and the general contingency reserve.

The unanimous vote on Tuesday comes after the council hosted two budget workshops on April 24 and May 10 where city department heads were asked to speak about their budget needs. 

Mayor Penny Luebs said both workshops went smoothly.

"There were no surprises," Luebs said.

The council also approved all of the city's tax levies for the upcoming fiscal year. The millages are as follows:

  • 10.76 mills as the general operating millage rate
  • 2.15 mills for rubbish collection and disposal
  • 4.2 mills for additional general operating millage rate
  • 1.97 mills for both real and personal property through the Downtown Development Authority District
  • 1.3 mills for Blair Memorial Library

  • The council approved a redevelopment liquor license for which will be located at 48/52 W. 14 Mile Rd. The owners, Phil Tsapatoris and Phil Lampos, said they hope to begin construction next week and open by Oct. 1. Tsapatoris said they plan to have live music nights, local beer and desserts from local bakeries.
  • The council approved a motion to increase the rental rates at Renshaw Senior Apartments by $10. The new rates are $390 for the efficiency apartments and $420 for the one-bedroom apartments.
