City Council Hits: Police to Auction Abandoned Items, Operation Medicine Cabinet Launching

Here are highlights from the City Council meeting Tuesday at City Hall.

The Clawson City Council on Tuesday night approved a request from the to auction off several abandoned items the department has in storage. Among those items are bikes, a purse, video poker machines and a flag.

Proceeds from the auctioned items will go to the city's general fund, said Police Chief Harry Anderson. An undisclosed amount of lost or abandoned cash will also go in the general fund.

Troy Jail Services

The council also approved a contract renewal with the city of Troy for dispatch and jail services through July 1, 2012. Anderson said there will be a 10 percent reduction in costs for the services in Troy, bringing the fee down to about $172,000 for the 2011-12 fiscal year.

"Troy has consistently provided a good service for us," Anderson said.

Operation Medicine Cabinet

The Clawson Police Department will launch Operation Medicine Cabinet on June 30, an initiative to collect unwanted or unused prescription medicines from citizens. There will be a drop-box at the Police Department in for people to drop off medications for the rest of the year.

Anderson said the goal of Operation Medicine Cabinet is to collect unwanted medications that users otherwise would flush down the toilet or leave around the house in places where children could access them. The medicines will be burned, Anderson said. and Alliance Mobile Health are sponsoring the initiative.
