City Council Notes: Ballpark Plans, Energy Efficiency Study

Highlights from Tuesday's Clawson council meeting.

Clawson City Council on Tuesday night discussed ballpark improvements, an energy study on city buildings and upcoming events.

Park plans discussed

City Council members discussed the controversial at its meeting Tuesday evening. Two weeks ago, a professional baseball team owner to revamp Clawson's City Park for minor league baseball games because of opposition among residents. 

Councilman Tom Palmer said that ultimately he was against the idea because of the limited parking spaces around the field. "It would be a nightmare," Palmer said.

Councilman Howie Airriess said he was also opposed. "I don’t wanna see commercial people in there," Airriess said.

Mayor Penny Luebs announced that a group of residents were devising a plan to fix up City Park, which will be presented to the Parks & Recreation Committee.

Resident said he hoped city officials would reconsider the proposal if the opportunity came again. "The fields are horrible," Orville said during public comment. "I’m just asking that you would be receptive."  

Energy efficiency to be studied

The City Council approved a resolution for Honeywell International to conduct an energy efficiency study of city buildings. 

Honeywell, which will perform the study at no cost to the city, will assess features such as heating and lighting and make recommendations to the council on what needs to be updated for energy efficiency.

Mayor Penny Luebs said the council will determine what improvements they want to finance after the study has been completed. "We will workshop and prioritize what needs to be done," Luebs said. "That’s where the money part comes in."

Honeywell could begin the study as early as Wednesday, the mayor said.

Upcoming events

  • This Saturday, the Downtown Development Authority will host an on North Main Street from 4 to 8 p.m.
  • In honor of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, police and fire officials will be at the on Sunday to speak with residents. There will also be bike and fire safety presentations. 
  • Oakland County Commissioner Mike Bosnic will host a game day at the Sept. 18 Farmers Market. There will be parachutes and games for families to enjoy.
