Clawson Leaders Address Accomplishments of City, School District

The city of Clawson has much to celebrate this year after passing two millages, maintaining fiscal stability and public safety and continuing the tradition of community events, Mayor Penny Luebs said in her State of the City address Wednesday morning.

Luebs delivered a speech in front of a crowd of city and school officials, business leaders and community members at . "We are in an era where local government is leaner and more agile," Luebs said. "We are driven by excellence and residents expect nothing less." 

"We remain a creative can, do community," she said.

School Board President Kevin Turner delivered the State of the Schools address discussing the district's , school technology updates and Clawson Public Schools "points of pride."

Luebs focused much of her speech on the city's accomplishments and measurable progress.

Accomplishments

• Clawson has become a member of the Oakland County Fire Mutual Aid and Oakland County Building Officials Association
• The continues with charitable programs such as the Stuff a Backpack Program and bowling fundraiser for a scholarship for Clawson students.
• Several new businesses have opened in Clawson, including , , and .
• Two millages were approved— and another that allows the .
• The city is meeting Gov. Rick Snyder's mandates with a dashboard to increase transparency, collaborating with other entities (such as Troy), and working to implement changes in employee compensation.
• Working to improve the Rochester Road corridor for walkability and biking with the Rochester Road Access Management program.

School highlights

Here are a few points from Turner's speech:

• School district revenues continue to match expenses.
• Enrollment is stable and predictable. There are 1,835 students in the district and one-third is school of choice.
• The district has purchased 900 new computers and 136 SMART Boards with the technology bond money.

In the last part of Wednesday's event, the Chamber of Commerce presented awards to standout business leaders and community volunteers.
