Residents, Officials Split on Park Plan Withdrawal

Some believe minor league baseball would have been an opportunity for Clawson; others are relieved the proposal didn't go through.

Clawson residents and officials are still divided about whether Clawson would have been a good home for a .

But there's one thing many residents agree on: withdrawal of his proposal to for the team was a surprise.

Martin said he would no longer be pursuing Clawson after a contentious public hearing on Tuesday showed many residents and Planning Commission members were against the idea. The commission tabled its final decision, citing incomplete details with traffic and parking.

"Honestly, three members of the Planning Commission were pretty vocally against it as were a lot of the residents," Clawson resident Kurt Hack said. "It’s unfortunate."

Hack said he hoped to see the park get a makeover and thought the minor league team would stir more activity in Clawson.

Some residents were unhappy with the overall negative atmosphere at Tuesday night’s meeting.

"I was watching one of the team’s presenters sitting there analyzing the crowd’s reaction at the meeting on Tuesday,” Clawson resident Denise Seipke said. "By his face I knew they were aware they were facing more opposition than expected."

A plan lacking the details, impacting neighboring residents

The details were what many of the community members wanted to see. The lack of a complete parking plan and traffic study left some undecided.

Seipke, who had mixed feelings about the project, said requesting that information is fair and a standard practice for the Planning Commission.

"They asked for a traffic study, which is the normal planning process," Seipke said. "The issue is someone was trying to push this through quickly and short-change the process. I just don’t think there was enough planning involved."

Most residents living near City Park opposed it because of the noise it would create. Martin said there would be 48 home games at the park from May through August. Residents say spring and summer are already busy times at the park.

Planning Commissioner Rocco Romano lives near the park and said he was relieved that Martin withdrew. Romano was against the proposal because of concerns with alcohol, safety and other issues.

“It was going to be an unfortunate burden on everyone who lives around the park,” Romano said. “Some folks wouldn’t be touched by the noise and it wouldn’t impact their lives. But I, for one, don’t wish to be serenaded by loud speakers 48 times a year.”

A need for a renovations

Martin’s project would have revamped the baseball field. Hack said Martin brought attention to the horrible conditions at the park during his presentation Tuesday. Hack said the field is "embarrassing" and needs a safety improvement.

Clawson school board member Mike Bosnic agreed.

“It would have been a great source of pride to be able to upgrade our facilities," Bosnic said. "I only want the best for our kids."

Director Mickey Alderman was disappointed to see the project fall through.

“We thought it was a good opportunity to get some very much needed improvements to the park,” Alderman. “But, I understand that there is certain info that they still needed to provide.”

Alderman said since Martin's proposal fell through, the city will assess the improvements needed at City Park.

“More information was needed to base a decision,” Mayor Penny Luebs said. “Now we have a greater understanding of what needs to happen in the park and that is something that we can look forward to repairing or refurbishing.”

Clawson resident Eva Burns said the proposal could have been good for the city. “I think it’s sad that he decided to pull out without giving us all the answers that he could have been giving,” she said. “It may have ended up being a good thing, but we’ll never know.”

canseeallsides September 13, 2011 at 12:52 AM
time to move out of Clawson
Sandy G September 13, 2011 at 03:56 PM
I can assure you I am no friend of MJ. The reason for the immaturity comment to MS is because he kept going on and on until MJ replied to him. They are both immature and will not let this ballpark thing die. I don't see the point to continue talking about something that could have been for our city but then on the other hand it was suppose to happen to quickly for me. There was no time to make sure that everything was put in place to make sure that the city of Clawson will be safe. It is done and over with so why keep talking about it. I agree that MJ is the pot stirrer. He thinks that he has all the answers, but half the time I can't make any sense of what he is saying. All I am saying is let it go so we can work on something else that can help our city, I hope.

Sandy G September 13, 2011 at 10:39 PM
Maybe ppl can take you more seriously if you would givenus your full name. I have been a resident of Clawson for 20 years. I know a lot of ppl in the city. Not saying that everything you say is untrue but you put things in such a way that it seems all you want to do is get ppl rialed up. You make yourself look like a trouble maker and all you are doing is making ppl mad and it seems to me that you enjoy that. Let us know who you really are & maybe we can take you more seriously.
micheal j September 14, 2011 at 01:01 AM

I have been writing for years i have lived here 4 40 yrs I am at all the meetings including school boards I always sit in the back and take notes/ I have never missed a school board meeting a PB or council meeting. If you put your name out there i will also. ha ha. Everything I say is true i read look listen hear. I know everything that is going on. MJ - I'm not sure why living in Clawson for 40 years makes any difference for your knowledge of Clawson. Many and I mean MANY have lived here longer than 40 years, me included. Sitting at all the meeting and taking notes, which I would love to see, is pointless. If you know so much about EVERYTHING, why don't you run for something? It seems you have the time. Many residents watch the meetings on their TV's at home, so we ARE NOT unaware of what is going on in our little city.

People - are we not looking for solutions to our problems? Quit the mud raking and offer concrete solutions to our problems. I said it early on - the semi-pro ball deal is DEAD. Now let us try to solve the problems in our park this controvery unearthed. Ideas, not blame is what is needed.
michael J September 14, 2011 at 05:08 PM
michael w.: U r right, but as I said before the problem is still there, so I feel it is not dead, (don't get the two confused} My sources say, the boards are being warned, scolded, advised, about discussing by email, or social net working. any Board business. Or personnal businness./ feelings. Makes sense doesn't it. I amswered a couple of days ago, to take heat away from board members, direct towards me. Joni if I ran I could not be on patch or FB, see above. as far as 44 yr's u have been here longer, okay, I respect that, I only said the #'s cause sonner or later some one would say, "he just moved in & already is saying.......... As far as last names, when clawson citizen, patti, both of them, sandy G, michael small "j" nonsolution, and others give there's, canseeallsides, james.............. since I posted on monday, it redirected the focus off PB. As far as getting rialed up, got to admit, some of the Walking Dead Have woken ................. not a bad thing
Sandy G September 14, 2011 at 11:48 PM
Exactly what I said earlier. Time to move on and look into something else to help our city. Stop debating and look for solutions. Nothing is gonna work if we can't even get along on a web site. Move on.
Sandy G September 14, 2011 at 11:54 PM
You are not rialing ppl up in a good way. Your just making ppl look at you as a wanna be mayor, school board member, or city member. Like I said in the past, you just through things out there and they never make any sense. When I read your comments, I might understand one sentence. I hate to tell you this, but you look like a complete joke. But I suppose if your having fun, keep at it because ppl will just stop commenting you because they are gonna have enough of your gibberish.
Michael J September 17, 2011 at 05:01 PM

Wrong "mikol" Janine, what a novel idea, another "for sale " sign in Clawson, would any one notice? there are so many. lets see, about 150 for sale, 30 hud or fore closed, not counting the ones that are sitting empty, the city just havn't noticed yet. we are 2.2 sq. mi. is it because of so many close generations, 4th and 5th? That kind of posts, just so shows cute sayings like Little towm with a big heart, are just that, empty sayings. I wonder how many parents have sent their kids to private or out sourced, "school of choice in reverse" cause of the 33% "school of choice"
