Photos: Graduates Cross the Stage at Clawson High School

Sunday's commencement ceremony included reflections from students and faculty in the school's gymnasium.

The class of 2012 celebrated new beginnings Sunday afternoon as they turned their tassels before a crowded gym of family, friends and faculty.

The commencement ceremony, which took place at the high school, recognized the 133 graduates with short speeches from both class leaders and faculty members.

"Today is the beginning, not the end, of our best years," said Daniel Carpenter in his valedictory speech. "Now we can only look forward to what the future holds."

The ceremony also included a salutatory speech from Lucas Rich and senior memories from Brandon Harden and Cassidy Harmon. Student Senate president Jonathon Horton and senior class president Maria Ochoa led the traditional turning of the tassels and graduate hat toss. Both graduates talked about the fun times and adversity the seniors faced and how it brought them together as a family.

"All of our hard work has finally paid off," Horton said. "The class of 2012 has created a bond that will last a lifetime."

Principal Ryan Sines offered a few words of inspiration for the graduates before the presentation of diplomas.

"If you want something, go get it," Sines said. "Life is tough, you will be knocked down, get up as fast as you can."

Parents and grandparents say they enjoyed the one-hour commencement ceremony and appreciated the remarks from students and faculty.

"It was really nice," said Pedro Romero, grandfather of Reianna Rodriguez. "Great words being spoken by the class of 2012."

Amy Allen, mother of Calvin Allen, agreed.

"I liked it very much," Amy Allen said. "I thought it was concise and still a celebration."
