High School Promotes Reading Through Scholastic Book Fair

Next week's fair at Clawson High School will raise money to purchase new books for the school library. And the public is welcome!

At , teachers want to create a reading culture. They strive to achieve this by allowing silent reading times in class and working with the library to get new young adult fiction.

A school book fair next week will help shine more light on reading, as teachers and students raise money to purchase new books for the school library.

“We are trying to get (students) to see that reading books is actually fun and it’s a way for them to spend their time," said English teacher Barbara Kienman, who helped organize the book fair. Teacher Kelly Horne, National Honor Society students and the Student Senate are working with Kienman.

Horne said many of the books in the school library are outdated and that the library doesn't have a fund allowance to purchase a lot of new, comtemporary books for students.

Scholastic provided hundreds of books, posters and other supplies for the school's book fair, which will take place during lunch hour on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at the high school. The school will top the week off with a Family Fun and Learning Day on Friday, April 29, with book-related activities such as board games, a poetry slam, a book fair display and a showing of a book turned into a movie.

Kienman said while the book fair will be an open event all week, Friday would be the best day for the public to attend. The school will also celebrate "Bring Your Parent to School Day" on Friday.

Among the book fair selections are nonfiction, graphic novels, young adult reads, children's books and more. Book prices are $4.99 to $7.99.

"The kids get to choose what they want to read," Horne said. "I think this is going to be great."

Some students believe the book fair will increase the desire to read — something many high school students don't fit into their busy schedule of jobs, homework and extracurricular activities.

Reading "allows us to be brighter students," said senior Hunter Parsons. "It makes us more well-rounded and prepared for what our future holds."

Kienman said the school will receive 40 percent of the proceeds from the book fair in Scholastic book dollars. If more than $2,000 is raised, the school will get Scholastic book dollars, plus cash back.
