Stuff-a-Backpack Drive Returns to Clawson

School will be back in session soon and local police officers are rounding up school supplies for low income students with a collection at and the Farmers Market. 

The is sponsoring its fourth annual Stuff-a-Backpack-Drive from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 12 at the . There will also be a collection box in the lobby of City Hall through Aug. 20.

Supplies needed include backpacks, paper and notebooks, glue sticks, folders and binders, rulers, scissors, colored pencils and markers and pens.

Clawson School Liason Officer Kellie Bauss said those items come from the supplies lists students receive at the beginning of every school year. The backpacks are filled with school supplies according to the students’ ages. Leftover items are turned over to the district and distributed to students and teachers throughout the school year based on need.

Last year, the police department stuffed 188 bags for students. In 2010, 154 bags were filled and in 2009, 97 bags. Bauss said she hopes to fill at least 200 bags this year.
