Sports at a Glance: Clawson Football Ready for Showdown Against Marine City

Pivotal game for the Trojans varsity team is set for Friday night at Clawson City Park.

This is the game that the  varsity football team had circled on its schedule.

The Trojans play Marine City at 7 p.m. Friday at . The Mariners are arguably the top Division 4 school in the state and ranked in the state’s overall top 10.

Clawson has lost to Marine City the last three seasons. The closest the Trojans have come to beating the Mariners was a 54-43 loss back in 2009.

Clawson isn’t alone in its lack of success against the state powerhouse. Marine City has only lost three times in the regular season since 2004. It’s also a team that has only missed the playoffs twice since 1982.

“Our non-league schedule is a double-edged sword,” Clawson coach Jim Sparks said. “You are playing teams like Marine City, Fitzgerald, Lakeview and Lake Shore over the course of the years you get battle hardened, but you have to find ways to beat those teams to get into the playoffs.”

Cross-country

The Trojans varsity boys and girls cross-country teams have their first MAC Gold Jamboree of the season at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Metro Beach hosted by Lake Shore and Lakeview.

All of the boys and girls teams in the MAC compete against each other in dual meets at the event and then again at a second jamboree later in the season.

The MAC Golf has nine teams in the conference and they will score against each other. The teams competing against the Trojans are East Detroit, Lakeview, Lake Shore, Warren Woods Tower, Lincoln, Center Line, Warren Fitzgerald and South Lake.

Last season on the boys side, Lake Shore was a perfect 16-0 across both jamborees to win the title. Clawson finished in the middle of the pack in fifth place with an 8-8 record. The Trojan girls finished in fifth place as well with a 4-10 record. Marysville won was at the top of the standings with a perfect 14-0 record.
