UPDATE: Clawson Girls Tennis Readies for Regionals With Tournament Win

Tennis team wins MAC Silver Division Tournament last week, while the Trojans golf coach hopes his team can turn things around.

May 18— Clawson tennis coach AnnMarie Jasieniecki called it a “big victory” for the girls varsity tennis program.

For the second year in a row the Trojans won the MAC Silver Division Tournament. The team played in the tournament last Wednesday and it was hosted by South Lake. Matches were played at South Lake, Warren Wood Towers and East Detroit.

The final results were very close, with Clawson winning by two points over Lakeview. Clawson finished in first with 40 points, Lakeview had 38 points and Mott finished in third with 34.

The top results for Clawson were sophomore Haley Ammons and senior Hunter Parsons winning the third doubles bracket. The Trojans also had three second place finishes – Sarah Allen, first singles; Laura Clissold, third singles; and first doubles, Kaitlynn Sikora and Stephanie Tennis.

The tournament championship was certainly a momentum builder for Clawson heading into districts on Thursday (9 a.m.) at Ann Arbor Greenhills.

Other teams competing in the districts include Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard, Greenhills, Bloomfield Hills Academy Of The Sacred Heart, Dearborn Heights Robichaud, Madison Heights Bishop Foley, Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central, Riverview Gabriel Richard, Royal Oak Shrine Catholic and Frankel Jewish Academy.

May 16—The Clawson boys varsity golf team is 2-3 on the season after splitting two meets last week. On Tuesday, the Trojans lost to Lamphere by just a single stroke 155-156 at Red Oaks Golf Club and then rebounded on Thursday for a big 178-226 win over Clintondale at the Fern Hill Golf Club.

Weather has forced Clawson to cancel three meets so far this season and coach Brett Hansen is working hard to try and reschedule those over the next two weeks before districts at the start of June.

“May doesn’t seem to want to cooperate a whole lot either,” Hansen said of the weather.

But he said every team in the area is going through the same thing.

“It’s been rough, but it’s not tougher for us than anybody else in the area,” Hansen said. “Everybody has to play in the same weather, I don’t look to that as an excuse for our poor play.”

Hansen expressed a lot of optimism before the season about his team’s chances, but so far the scores Clawson has put up in this season’s meets haven’t been to his liking.

“I’m very disappointed in our play this year,” Hansen said. “It hasn’t been what I expected. It wasn’t even as good as last year. I was very optimistic; however, our mature, senior laden team hasn’t shot the scores I know we’re capable of shooting.”

Districts don’t start until June 2 and Hansen said there’s certainly enough time to turn things around and for his golfers to play up to their talent.

The boys played Warren Mott at the Maple Lane Golf Club on Monday and are working to schedule some of the early season cancellations for this week.

Girls Softball

The girls varsity softball team had a tough week, losing all six games it played by at least 10 runs. It started off the week with a 15-0 loss to Warren Woods Tower and things didn’t get much better from there.

On Tuesday, the girls lost both games of a doubleheader to Royal Oak (15-0, 15-5) then on Thursday lost to East Detroit 16-0 and closed out the week on Friday with two losses to Port Huron (20-1, 18-4).

For a full recap of the team’s doubleheader against the Ravens . As coach Ray McMann stressed to Patch on Tuesday, he’s looking for his team to focus on the fundamentals to close out the year. He said if the team can cut down on the fielding errors, the scoreboard will be a lot closer.

“We need to get rid of errors, make the little plays we need to make,” McMann said. “Even if we cut our errors in half we’ll be in much better shape.”

The team is young with only two players on the squad that have experience. They are also starting three freshman. Clawson’s record is now 0-13 on the season.
