Clawson Soccer Defeats Warren Woods 8-0

Sisters Alaina and Olivia Paquette score three goals a piece to help Trojans dominate on Monday.

CLAWSON – The cold weather sure didn’t deter the Clawson girls varsity soccer team from victory on Monday night.

With temperatures in the low 40s, the Trojans beat Warren Woods Tower 8-0 by the mercy rule with just under 10 minutes to go in the second half. At 12-1-1 (8-1-1 Macomb Gold Division) Clawson is in sole possession of the Gold Division lead with two games to go.

“Mott’s right on our heels, but no one can touch us if we win out,” Trojans coach Jared Kullman said. “I told the girls last week we had four championship games left (four games within the division), now we have two left.”

If the girls play like they did on Monday, a division title should be coming home to Clawson.

The Trojans controlled the tempo of the entire game and out hustled Warren Woods from the opening kick.

“That’s been our goal this year, I tell the girls to keep playing until the other girls stop and if they don’t stop, well you just keep going,” Kullman said. “They work hard, they play for 80 minutes."

Clawson dazzled the home crowd on offense with a couple of its first half goals. Senior Alaina Paquette’s first goal of the game was a shot taken from closer to mid-field line than the net. Senior Alyssa Forsyth set Paquette up for a wide open strike in the middle of the field. The ball went sailing over the goalie’s fingertips to the top right corner of the net.

Later in the half, Paquette scored on a corner kick. The ball curved toward the goal and the Warren Woods goaltender got a hand on it, but the shot was strong enough to carry through. Paquette finished off the hat trick with the goal that ended the game.

Paquette’s sister, Olivia, also had three goals. The freshman scored three times in the first 20 minutes of the first half.

“We’ve got a couple of real nice shooters,” Kullman said. “It’s been a little bit of a chore to get them to get the confidence they need to take those shots. I’m not sure what it was today, if it was in the water or what it was, but they got that confidence today. They put the shots up high, where the goalie couldn’t reach.”

Warren Woods won the Gold division last season and played Clawson close earlier in the year. But on Monday night they didn’t stand a chance.

“Warren Woods is generally a good team, last time we played them it wasn’t anywhere near this one-sided,” Kullman said.

Notes - Clawson's other two goals were scored by senior Lauren Bergeron and sophomore Jessie Rendell. Both goals were scored in the second half.
