Playoffs in Full Swing for Baseball, Softball and Soccer

Track and tennis teams end season at regionals.

The Clawson varsity baseball, softball and soccer teams are gearing up for districts. The playoffs start for all three teams this week.

On Tuesday, the Trojans girls soccer team gets things rolling at home with their opening district game against Madison Heights (6 p.m.). They play the winner of Harper Woods and Detroit Cesar Chavez on Thursday.

The girls just finished up their third straight winning season and hope that success will carry over into the Division 3 playoffs. The best team in their district is Country Day, a top 10 team in the state, but it is on the opposite side of the bracket. Clawson wouldn’t have to face the Yellowjackets until the district finals.

Baseball and softball

Both the baseball and softball team are in the Division 3 regional at New Haven. The MHSAA hasn’t posted schedules for either sport. Once the games are announced, Clawson Patch will post an update with that information.

And while the playoffs are just getting started for those Clawson teams, a couple others had their season end last week.

Track results

The Clawson boys and girls varsity track teams came home empty ended last weekend at the Division 3 regional in New Haven. Both teams failed to qualify anybody for the state finals.

As a team, the boys finished with 25 points and in seventh place out of 13 teams. Macomb Lutheran North literally ran away with first place (169 points), it finished more than 40 points ahead of Warren Michigan Collegiate, who finished in second.

Clawson’s best chance for qualifying was Ryan Pouget in the 400 meter dash. Pouget ran a 55.18 and finished in sixth place in the race. His time was less than two seconds above the Division 3 qualifying time of 53.5.

Teammate Ryan Bailey ran in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. His time of 12:31.43 was well behind the qualifying time (10:47.6) in the 3200 meter, but he was only 20 seconds off the pace in the 1600 meter. He had a time of 5:09.62 and the qualifying time was 4:48.9.

The Trojans only had one student compete in a non-running event. Marlon Harris had an eighth place finish in discuss with a throw of 101’11 feet. The qualifying distance was 121’9.

On the girls side, Clawson finished with only nine points as a team. The Trojans finished in second to last place out of 11 teams, but only competed in two events. Macomb Luthern North also dominated the girls field with 170 points, no other team had more than 91 points.

The Trojans ran in two relay races, the 400 and 800 meter relays. In the 400, the girls finished in eighth place with 1;00.61 and in the 800 they finished in fifth with a time of 2:10.99.

Girls tennis

In Ann Arbor last week the Clawson girls varsity tennis team’s season also came to end. The Trojans competed at Ann Arbor Geenhills in probably the hardest Division 4 regional.

According to the Michigan High School Tennis Coaches Association poll, four of the top 10 teams in the state all competed in the regional – Bloomfield Hills Sacred Heart (3), Monroe St. Mary Catholic (5), Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard (7) and Greenhills (10).

Gabriel Richard banged heads with four other top-10 ranked squads at the Ann Arbor Greenhills Division 4 tennis regional last week and came up short May 19.

The No. 10-ranked Pioneers finished fifth with nine points playing against some of the stiffest regional competition in the state.

No. 3 Bloomfield Hills Academy of the Sacred Heart took first place with 27 points followed by No. 7 Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard with 21.

Finishing third was No. 5 Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central (18), fourth with 12 points was Greenhills, which came into the regional tied in the rankings with Richard.

Sacred Heart won the regional by sweeping all four doubles brackets and winning No. 3 singles. Gabriel Richard finished and Monroe St. Mary also qualified.
