Clawson Mavericks Cheerleaders to Compete in 'Cheer-Off' Saturday

The Mavericks cheerleaders will host the event at Royal Oak High School Nov. 3.

They got you in the spirit at the football games this season, now it's your turn to root for the Clawson Mavericks cheerleaders this weekend as they host the 'Cheer-Off'.

Come out to Royal Oak High School on Saturday at 10 a.m. and show your support for all four pep squads - flag (ages five to seven), freshman (ages eight to nine), junior varsity (ages 10 to 11) and varsity (ages 12 to 13) - as they face off in the annual event.

The contest is described as the equivalent of the Oakland/Macomb Youth Football Association's 'Super Bowl' Championship.

12 teams representing local cities will be competing in the 'Cheer-Off', where each of the four divisions will perform separate cheer and dance routines. The freshman, junior varsity and varsity squads will be ranked and awarded first, second and third place prizes. The flag division will not be judged.

"Our girls practice since August on their cheer and dance routines along with doing sideline cheers all season long too," said Nancy Verner, general manager of the Mavericks cheer organization. "The fact that we are hosting makes it an even more special event this year."
