Mavericks Varsity Team Aims to Have Roster Filled Soon

Football team directors would like to start preparing the players for the season with summer clinics.

Parents interested in signing their kids up for the Clawson Mavericks varsity football team should register immediately, directors said Tuesday.

Mavericks General Manager Todd Shattuck said his goal is to have registration filled and closed by June 30 so he can plan clinics for the team this summer.

The Clawson Mavericks is a football and cheerleading organization for kids age 6-13. The varsity football team, for 12- and 13-year-olds, typically struggles with registration because kids at that age are finding interest in other activities, Shattuck said.

The varsity team had 15 players last year, however, Shattuck aims to have 20 or more this year.

"That’s what you need to be a successful program," Shattuck said, adding that a smaller team makes the season harder on the players. So far, seven players have signed up for the varsity team.

In previous years, the Mavericks have allowed registration up until the first practice in mid-August, but Shattuck wants the entire team to be better prepared this year. Clinics would start as early as July.

"That’s what’s going to promote success is practice," Shattuck said. "This would really drive it home and everybody would be a lot happier with the program."

Mavericks directors are also offering perks for parents who sign up their kids early this year. Varsity players will receive new practice jerseys, a helmet and game jerseys by July 1, as opposed to waiting until the season starts.

The varsity team will also have the opportunity to lead the Clawson 4th of July parade.

The Mavericks program has about 150 participants each year and teams are divided up by age group: from Flag Team, Freshman Team, Junior Varsity and Varsity. There are eight games in the season that runs from August-October.

Registration for varsity players is $155 and isn't due until the first practice. Right now "all I want them to do is sign up," Shattuck said.
