Week In Review: Clawson Football And Soccer Rolling

Both Trojan teams finish third week of the fall season undefeated.

The varsity soccer and football teams aren’t showing any signs of slowing down.

Both Trojan teams are undefeated and winning their games in impressive fashion.

On the soccer field last week, Clawson won two Macomb Area Conference Gold division games. It beat Roseville on Tuesday 2-0 and then came right back to beat St. Clair 4-1. The wins pushed the team’s overall record to 5-0-1.

In Tuesday’s game, they showed their depth by winning without arguably their best player Tyler Jugon.

Senior Tyler Lehman and junior Jeremy Schalenbrand each had goals against Roseville. Starting in Jugon’s place, Will Pasquin set up Schalenbrand’s goal to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead in the first half.

Neither bad weather nor physical play from the Panthers could slow down Clawson’s defense and the lead held.

After the win, head coach Jared Kullman said he expected a tough game against St. Clair. Clawson played the Saints twice in 2010, but both games were decided by a single goal.

“Another tough game, back-to-back is kind of rough when you go to one tough game to another tough team,” Clawson head coach Jared Kullman said. “St. Clair gave us a little trouble last year.”

Turns out Kullman had nothing to worry about, his team beat the Saints 4-1.

Jugon was back in the lineup, scoring two goals and adding an assist. Pasquin scored and had an assist as well.

The Trojans finished 15-2-2 and won the division last season, if they keeping playing like this, they could be adding another division title to their trophy case.

Football

Another team Clawson looking to add hardware to its trophy case is the varsity football team. It beat New Haven for the fourth straight year on Friday. And the team literally only needed 24 minutes to do it.

Down 48-0 at halftime, the Rockets coaching staff decided to call the game after intermission. The lopsided score combined with low numbers on New Haven’s varsity team, made even lower by injuries, led to the decision.

It wasn’t hard to blame them the way the Trojans were playing. DeShawn Gilbert scored on the opening kickoff and they needed less than two minutes to push the score to 20-0. Even with the backups in 70 points wouldn’t have been out of the question.

Clawson has outscored its opponents 107-10 in three games this season.

Other Results…

* The only varsity boys tennis match scheduled for the week was cancelled. Clawson was supposed to play at Center Line on Wednesday, but rain forced the cancellation.

* Rain also affected the Trojans home golf meet scheduled for Wednesday. Clawson was set to play St. Clair at Red Oaks Golf Course, but that was postponed until Sept. 22.

* The Clawson varsity volleyball team lost to Royal Oak on Tuesday in three sets (25-12, 25-15, 25-24).
