The national average of $3.65 for a gallon of unleaded gasoline is down 16 cents from one year ago and down 29 cents from this year’s peak, according to AAA. Despite these drops, though, this year’s average is the third-highest price on record for a Memorial Day weekend.

The highest AAA recorded was early May last year, when we were paying $4.24.
