30 Days of Giving, Day 13: Furniture Bank

Do you have a piece of furniture that's in good condition, that you no longer want? Donate it!

This is part of a 30-day series of ways Patch community members can give back this holiday season. We hope you'll take part in this 30 Days of Giving and take the spirit beyond the holidays, because there truly is need all year long.

Give a piece of home for the holidays

Adequate shelter is one of our basic needs, but adorning a home with beds, tables, couches and more isn’t an easy task for everyone. The Furniture Bank of Southeastern Michigan, located at 333 N. Perry St. in Pontiac, was established to provide families suffering from a crisis or tough economic times a way to furnish their homes. Donated furniture is given to those in need free of charge.

The Furniture Bank is primarily on the lookout for gently-used beds, mattresses and cribs, but is also looking for sofas, dressers, full-size appliances, dining tables and chairs. Other items that can be donated include linens, lamps, glassware, pots and pans and more.

If one or more essential items are being donated, the Furniture Bank staff will personally pick up the items. Otherwise, people planning to donate to the Furniture Bank can drop off their gently used furniture at their warehouse in Pontiac between 9a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Last year the organization was able to distribute 12,000 items across Oakland and Macomb counties — serving a total of 2,700 families. For more information on the Furniture Bank and donating guidelines, visit www.furniture-bank.org. If you would like to arrange a pick-up date for one or more essential items, call 248-332-1300.
