How to Upload a Photo to Patch

Uploading a photo to a Patch website is easy and quick, once you know how to do it. Here's a simple how-to for you to follow.

  1. Sign up as a Patch user. To add a photo or other content such as events or announcements, you need to be a registered member of Patch. You can do this by clicking "Sign Up" at the top of the site.
  2. Select the photo you'd like to upload.
  3. All photos should be original, meaning you need to have taken them yourself. Photos should be in a "jpeg" format. This is the most common photo format. If you see an extension of your photo file that says "tif," "gif," "bmp," or something else, look for a way to save your photo in a "jpeg" or "jpg" format.
  4. Photos should be saved, if possible, at a medium size and a "resolution" of 72 dpi. If you do not know or have the ability to do this, don't worry too much; our system does some "crunching" for you. But the smaller the size of your image, the quicker it will upload to our site, so for efficiency you may want to keep the file sizes smaller.
  5. To add a photo, click on the link under the current photos that says "Add your photos and videos."
  6. A window will open; click on "Choose files to upload." This will take you to your computer files, where you can choose the image you wish to add. Click it.
  7. One your photo is ready to be uploaded, you will see a screen with a link that says "Start uploading." Click that.
  8. Your photo will upload, and when it is done the computer will ask you what you want to do next. Click on "edit your new photos." This is where you add your caption information.
  9. Click to add caption information. You may also change the "photo credit" if you need to do so. If someone other than you took the photo, click to change that.
  10. Be sure to include in your caption information about when and where the photo was taken, and fully identify any people in the photo. If relevant, tell why this photo says "Michigan" to you.

I titled my photos, but there is no title on them. Should I upload them again? Also, they are in high resolution. Should I re-submit them?

If you mean "edit," as in crop, change the shadow, etc., there is no way. Once it is uploaded that is how it will appear on the site.

Donna, if you're looking to add a photo to an article that is already posted, you'll see the current photos to the right of the article. Underneath those, there's a link to add your photos and video.

Donna, are you trying to upload a photo, or do you want to make one of your other photos your profile picture?

I uploaded some photos for the Photos of Michigan contest, before reading the rule of only 3 entries per person, per week. Is there any way to delete already uploaded photos? I've searched around the website for quite awhile and haven't found a way.

Go to the pics & clips tab on the top, it should allow you to upload and caption your photo!

For the Photos of Michigan contest, one of my photos (week 10) I didn't put a caption to tell where it is. The other 2 are captioned. My remaining photo (of a waterfall) is Wagner Falls. Can that please be added? I cannot find a way to change/make a caption after the photo has been uploaded.
Thanks!

Yes, I have "re-edited" my photos, and if I could FIND them, could probably figure it out again and could help...but where are they? (mine).

How do you know if you downloaded a photo to the contest correctly? I received and email saying I downloaded my picture to the Oakland Lake Orion Patch...but I live in Grosse Pointe...

I just tied uploaded a photo from my IPhone and I was never prompted to edit or add captions. Does this disqualify me?

Not at all, Laura. I'll be happy to add the caption in for you. Just post it here as a comment and I'll make sure it gets on your photo. Thanks and good luck!

Hi! I uploaded a picture...it was supposed to be for the photo contest but I don't think that's where it went. I didn't see the link for the "comments" so if you would add the info? "Sunrise over E.28th St., Ship Bottom, LBI, NJ". Thanks! Let me know if you need more information....
