In another attempt to debunk widespread belief that the world is coming to an end on Dec. 21, 2012, NASA released a video intended to be aired on Dec. 22—confirming that life on Earth continues on. The four-minute video titled Why the World Didn't End Yesterday, labels the Dec. 21 Mayan apocalypse as a hoax and explains how the rumors began. Earlier this month, the U.S. Government responded to apocalyptic fears by posting a blog on the USA.gov website to help dispel the rumors. The Mayans may or may not have predicted the apocalypse will occur on Dec. 21. Even the New York Times and NASA are talking about it. Do you buy it?

Time for another Patch poll, and it's simple this time: Do you expect the world to end on Dec. 21, 2012? Apocalypse in the house... Seriously though, even NASA is getting in on the action. The agency created a page on its website devoted to debunking the Mayan apocalypse idea—not least because the Mayans never predicted any such thing. The date is simply the end of one time period that simply starts over. “Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012,” NASA wrote. But maybe they're just fun-haters: there are a number of parties planned for Dec. 20 or 21 this year, just in case the Earth explodes, or zombies run amok. With the "long count…

We should face 2012 with perspective and intention, rather than self-defeating resolutions, advises Cooking for Special Diets columnist Alissa Malerman.
My dad once told me how he became successful at making resolutions. "I resolved years ago to stop making resolutions," he said. "And I've stuck to it ever since." As we all think back on the year that has passed, and look to the one ahead with great expectations, it's easy for the resolution wheels to start churning. If a resolution is (and it usually is) an unrealistic goal that will just self-explode in a month or so, it may not be the best way to approach the next 360 days. We should be facing the new year with perspective and intention and use that knowledge to drive us farther along the path we've already created for ourselves and not into a brick wall because we couldn't spend six days a week at the gym, eliminate carbs or run a …

Penny Luebs didn't get everything she wanted on contracts, message boards and other issues last year, but the mayor moves forward with plans for the new year.
At the beginning of 2011, Clawson Mayor Penny Luebs had a long list of goals she wanted to accomplished for the city. However, with the city's economic challenges and opposition from City Council, Luebs said many of her goals were not met. "Grand ideas did not match hands-on work when it came to completing goals in 2011," Luebs said. "This was an economic, tumultous year for all of us." In an email to the Clawson Patch, Luebs provided updated information on her goals from 2011 and a look at what's in store for 2012. Recycling: "We are paid $55 per ton for recyclables and we pay for trash pickup. I am encouraged that residents will continue to recycle. SOCRRA now offers recycling for businesses and interest by businesses is expanding." Art …
