Weekend Planner: Schalm Carnival, Tables of Treasure and More

A roundup of weekend happenings in Clawson and surrounding areas.

Schalm Elementary School will host its 7th annual carnival and auction from 4-8 p.m. Friday. There will be T-ball, face painting, mechanical surf board/bull, cake walk, Wii games, mini-hoops, a magician, 50/50 raffle and many other fun activities. Food will also be available in the cafeteria from 4-7:30 p.m. The Clawson Senior Center is hosting a garage and craft sale from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. April 14. There will be more than 50 tables of items for sale plus a lunch counter and a bake sale. Admission is free. The Friends of the Library book sale kicks off Saturday at Blair Memorial Library. The sale will run through April 19. There wil be a variety of books, magazines, CDs and more at prices ranging from 25 cents up to $2. The sale will run …

Troy Family Daze Opens Thursday

The longest-running and largest family festival in Troy returns this week after being on hiatus for a year.

Four days of carnival rides, live music, games, stage shows and a variety of other family-oriented fun will kick off Thursday as the Troy Family Daze Festival returns to the city for the first time since 2009.  Started as a volunteer-produced festival in 1968, Troy Daze is the longest-running community celebration of its kind in the city. "In this day and age, with everything so going so fast, it's nicer to throw an old-time festival — like you see in the old movies," said Jim Cyrulewski, vice president of the North Woodward Community Foundation, the new fiscal sponsor of the event. Viewfinder: A Water War and Youth All-Star Baseball Game

There were a lot of activities happening at Clawson City Park on the Fourth of July including a water battle between the Clawson and Troy Fire Departments and a couple of youth baseball games.

Clawson City Park was full of energy and sweaty spectators this afternoon as the annual Fourth of July activities took over the city. Every year, the Clawson and Troy Fire Departments continue their tradition of competing against one another in a series of water battles where they use fire hoses to spray a buoy on a cable back and forth. This Fourth of July, in between rounds, the firemen refreshed the crowd by turning the hoses on them. The park was filled with locals and out-of-towners enjoying rides, snacks and games at the fair and checking out the arts and crafts show, but many took a break to support the youth All-Star Baseball Games ("Majors" and "Minors"). Viewfinder: Clawson Fourth of July Carnival

The event at City Park offers games, rides, vendors and activities through Monday.

There were lots of smiling faces Sunday afternoon at City Park as the Fourth of July carnival opened to the public. Attractions include a bounce house, horse riding, bungee trampolines and more. There are also games, rock climbing, vendors and all the usual carnival food offerings. The carnival will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday. The $2 admission fee will help to fund the city's annual fireworks show.
