Here are some of the displays that residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb county can now see for free at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
After tri-county voters passed the DIA millage in the election yesterday, the Detroit Insititue of Arts wants to make sure that residents get their money's worth. “When we announced that we would seek the millage, we pledged that if it were to pass we would provide free admission to residents of all three counties. We are immediately following through on that pledge," said Graham W. J. Beal, DIA director, in a press release. Tri-county voters approved a tax of 0.2 mills for the next 10 years to fund the arts authority, so admission is now free to residents of Oakland, Wayne and Macomb county residents. Here are some of the special exhibits that residents can see: A painting by Johannes Vermeer on loan from the National Gallery of Art in …

City officials say DIA masterpieces add a nice touch to the scenery of Clawson.
Five reproduced masterpieces from the Detroit Institute of Arts are now displayed for viewing outside of downtown businesses. The DIA hung up the artwork on Thursday at Leon & Lulu, Black Lotus Brewing Company, Everyday Yoga, Da Nang and Tavern on the Main. Clawson was one of five communities selected this year for Inside|Out, which provides five-12 reproductions set up within walking or bike-riding distance from each other. This is the third year for the DIA program. Nearby communities Troy, Royal Oak and Ferndale have also received artwork from the program. "They really are a great touch," Downtown Development Authority director Joan Horton said. "They really do add to our downtown." Horton said Clawson will host a DIA Inside|Out kick-…

Tri-county proposals spur debates over Detroit-suburbs ties, museum finances and property tax levels.
Mary Cassatt, Vincent van Gogh and Diego Rivera are among candidates for local support in Metro Detroit's Aug. 7 primary elections. A millage request by the Detroit Institute of Arts – the museum displaying their art – will be on ballots in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties. Each county's elected commissioners this spring approved language for a 0.2-mill proposal to support the DIA as a regional resource. In addition to nominating candidates for congressional, state, county and local offices on Primary Day, voters will be asked to answer that yes-or-no DIA tax question. An impassioned debate has begun to intensify, as it always does when property taxes and city-suburban relations are involved. The political landscape also is shaped by …

Detroit Institute of Arts will also host a free admission day for Clawson families in August.
Reproduced masterpieces from the Detroit Institute of Arts' collection will soon be displayed for viewing in Clawson as part of the museum's Inside|Out program. Clawson was one of five communities selected this year for Inside|Out, which provides five-12 reproductions set up within walking or bike-riding distance from each other. This is the third year for the DIA program. Mayor Penny Luebs said Clawson will receive five DIA reproduction art pieces that will be set up outside downtown businesses July 3-Sept. 30. "I think it's marvelous," Luebs said of the program. "Along with art comes an education about art to build that interest that people have." Other selected communities this year include Garden City, Trenton, Troy and Waterford. …

State's beauty is found indoors, too.
Not all of Michigan's beautiful spots are found outside. Reader Albert "Bud" Waller shared this striking photo taken inside the Detroit Institute of Arts, another of Michigan's jewels. "I was at the DIA for the first time last spring and had my camera with me," the Rochester resident said. "I thought it was an interesting picture for my photo class at the OPC (Older Persons Commission) in Rochester." To email this photo, just look for the EMAIL button above the headline.
