Blair Memorial Library hosted the shopkeeper for an entertaining look at how she finds products from vendors, artists and factories all over the world to bring to Clawson.
Leon & Lulu in Clawson is truly the store for everybody and nobody at the same time. Some people come from around southeastern Michigan to simply have a cup of coffee with a close friend, explained co-owner Mary Liz Curtin, while others buy from the store's massive collection of stuff collected from around the globe. Curtin shared some of her favorite places to buy from, at a Blair Memorial Library program which filled the room on Monday night. There, not only did Curtin share her experiences from around the world, she also gave a well-received history of her store in Clawson and a look at the future of Leon & Lulu. Artists from across the state will congregate at Leon & Lulu to showcase a variety of handcrafted wares. 38 local artists will show their hand-made art at the juried show to be held on Sunday, Nov. 25 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Monday, Nov. 26 from 3 p.m.-9 p.m. The market exhibits more than 40 local artists with products including jewelry, pottery, photography, clothing, and much more. All products are hand made in Michigan and the artists will be in attendance. Come to the Blair Memorial Library Monday at 7 p.m. and let technology trainer Bart Gioia help you out in a special "Internet Basics" class. The cost is free, but please reserve a spot ahead of time. 2. Bring your children back to the library on Tuesday for "PAWS to Read". Mary Liz Curtin receives recognition for her 35 years of experience in retail.
A notable Clawson business owner was honored earlier this month in Atlanta for a successful career in the retail industry. Mary Liz Curtin, owner of the popular eclectic furniture store Leon & Lulu, received an award at the ICON Honors ceremony before a crowd of about 900 people on July 14. ICON Honors strives to recognize global innovation in the gift and home furnishings industry each year. The awards ceremony is a collaboration between AmericasMart Atlanta, Gift & Home Trade Association (GHTA) and national media sponsor HFN. Award winners include home and gift retailers, manufacturers, sales agents and service providers. Curtin said she was honored to receive the award. Events Blair Memorial Library will host its Paws to Read program for youth from 1-2:30 p.m. Tuesday. Kids will have a chance to read stories to certified therapy dogs. You can register at the library or call 248-588-5500. Leon & Lulu will host a Red Cross Blood Drive from 1-6:45 p.m. Wednesday. Everyone who gives blood will receive a free gift. The Clawson Farmers Market will officially open on Sunday. The market operates every Sunday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. through Sept. 30. There will be no market Labor Day weekend in observance of the holiday. Announcements Several organizations in Clawson are seeking volunteers and members.
