Clawson High School seniors were awarded with honor cords, medallions, department recognition and thousands of dollars in scholarships Monday evening at an awards ceremony in the school's auditorium. Representatives from several school and community organizations were at the event to present students with their scholarship awards. Some seniors said the event was bittersweet, as they conclude their high school careers and prepare to attend college, join the workforce or enlist in the armed forces. Alli Costine received four scholarships Monday. Costine signed a letter of intent last year to play volleyball for Macomb College. "I'm proud," Costine said. "I've grown as a person a lot. High school seniors are invited to enter #mi2020 scholarship contest while Senate Democrats prepare to introduce legislation this week to offer free in-state tuition.
High school seniors are being encouraged to enter a new $10,000 scholarship competition as a means to promote a state Democrat-backed plan called "Michigan 2020" that would provide free in-state college tuition for every Michigan student. The college affordability plan, announced in January and set to be introduced later this week with approval from Michigan Senate Democrats, would give each graduate of a Michigan high school an education grant of approximately $9,500 each year for in-state university or community college tuition. The estimated $1.8 billion proposal would be funded by putting a term limit on corporate tax credits and charging state sales tax to online retailers. One hundred and thirty-seven graduates crossed the stage in the Clawson High School gymnasium on Sunday.
There were tears of joy, cheers, laughter and an echoing of applause Sunday in the Clawson High School gymnasium as 137 graduates crossed the stage and entered a new chapter in their lives. Parents and supporters packed the sweltering gym on an afternoon when temperatures outside reached the mid-80s. But it was clear that the heat would not stop the crowd from yelling or the graduates from smiling ear to ear. They had come too far. Clawson High School 's most accomplished students were honored Monday at Senior Honors Night as the school, parents and staff recognized four years of hard work for students who will soon end their high school years. Senior Allison Hazel was recognized for seven scholarships; valedictorian, Nichole Pedro, and co-salutatorians, Kevin Cunningham and Michael Francis were announced; and several others were awarded various honors.
