Proposed Clawson Budget Would Cut Police Pay, Close City Hall on Fridays

Hearings on tax increases are set.

The Clawson City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall.

The council has a full meeting agenda, including a vote on the 2011-12 budget proposal. City Manager Mark Pollock will present the budget which proposes to cut the hours of operation for city offices, a 10 percent wage cut for the (officers will work the same hours) as well as health care concessions. With the proposed budget, would only be open four days a week, as opposed to the current five days. This would also apply to the and Teen Center.

Mayor Penny Luebs said she is not in favor of closing City Hall on Fridays.

"I will probably vote 'no'," Luebs said. "I look at it as a service that taxpayers pay for."

The proposed budget would cut the city's deficit from $670,000 down to about $198,000, Luebs said.

There will also public hearings to levy mills for the general operating millage, rubbish collection and disposal millage, real and personal property throughout the Clawson Downtown Development Authority District, and the additional general operating millage. There will also be public hearings for the Capital Improvement Program and combined city budgets. The council solicits public comment on each proposal before it is adopted.

Correction: City offices closing on Fridays would cut the annual salary of employees by 10 percent.
