New Computers and New Grading Scale Expected in the Fall

News you can use at the end of the school year for Clawson Public Schools.

New Grading Scale

Clawson schools will switch to a new grading scale next school year. Each school will adopt a 4.0 scale replacing the letter grade system they currently use. Principal Ryan Sines said the new scale has grading intervals of .33 as opposed to the 10-point grading intervels that made it harder for students to recover from low grades. The new scale is as follows:

  • A=  4.0
  • A-= 3.67-3.99
  • B+= 3.33-3.66
  • B=   3.0-3.32
  • B-=  2.67-3.0
  • C+= 2.33-2.66
  • C=   2.0-2.32 
  • C-=  1.67-1.99
  • D+= 1.33-1.66
  • D= 1.0-1.32
  • D-= .67-.99
  • E= .33-.66

Clawson schools expect to implement all new computers in the school buildings beginning in early July. Technology Director Marcus Isabell said they hope to have the computers up and running by the time school starts in the fall. Voters in the May election that will fund updated equipment for each school building. The district will spend about $820,000 on new computers; 60 computers won't need to be replaced because they are fairly new, Isabell said.

Isabell said he plans to meet with teachers and school administrators in the fall to decide what brand of smartboards, clickers and document cameras the district should order. The new equipment will be installed over time.

Retirements

The following staff members are retiring from Clawson Schools this year:

  • Virginia Mantela, principal of
  • George Johnston, transportation department
  • Sylvia Johnston, special education paraprofessional
  • Ed Churilla, maintenance department
  • Marilyn Shier, library media technology

Layoffs Rescinded

Clawson schools will rescind 13 of the 15 teacher layoffs this year. The following teachers are guaranteed a job in the fall: Jaime Martin, Dorian Hackney, Donald Myers, Meghan Parnell, Matthew Provost, John Kernan, Rachel Haller, Corinna Wild, David Starlin, Brynn Allen, Jennifer Stanton, Noel Slowik and Jill O’Connor.
